The Central International Relatins Office of the University of Zagreb, in collaboration with the Europaeum of the University of Regensburg in Germany, successfully implemented the international project “Deutsch-Kroatisches Tandem für Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen”. As part of this project, Darija Željko Mrljak, an assistant at the Department of Criminal Procedure Law at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Law, spent the period from 1st to 30th April 2024 at the University of Regensburg in Germany. In return, Dr. Nina Kerstensteiner from the Chair of Public Law and Politics at the Faculty of Law, University of Regensburg, visited the University of Zagreb in Croatia from 12th July to 12th August 2024.
During their research stays, they co-authored a paper on the topic “Access to Justice: The Role of Legal Clinics in Addressing Current Social Issues”, which they plan to submit for publication. The comparative paper examines the role of the Law Clinic at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Law and the Refugee Law Clinic at the University of Regensburg. It highlights how legal clinics, in addition to providing practical education for young lawyers, serve as catalysts for social change by enabling access to justice for vulnerable social groups.
Darija Željko Mrljak and Dr. Nina Kerstensteiner expressed their gratitude to Dr. Branka Roščić, head of the Central International Relations Office at the University of Zagreb, and Mrs. Lisa Unger-Fischer, managing director of the Europaeum from the University of Regensburg for their successful project application i.e. coordination and implementation of the project. They also thanked Prof. Dr. Iris Goldner Lang, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, and the staff of the Office for International Cooperation at the Faculty of Law in Zagreb for their hospitality during Dr. Nina Kerstensteiner's stay in Zagreb. Both researchers have gained valuable insights into German and Croatian legal cultures and look forward to continuing the fruitful collaboration established through this commendable project.
