University of Sussex researchers have created a sound projector, which could change the way people consume audio content in the future. The sound projector is able to transfer sound to a localized area, and it can follow a person as they move. The projector is able to follow people using face-tracking software, which will keep the unit pointed toward its target.
The sound projector works by producing a ball of sound that will be sent to wherever the projector is pointed. Gianluca Memoli, one of the researchers, gives the analogy of a person using a pair of binoculars to track a moving object. Memoli stated that technology could be used to deliver sound to a single person, while also giving them the ability to interact with their external environment. While headphones provide an isolated experience the sound projector could allow a person to be present in a situation and consume audio.
The technology could be developed and used commercially in a variety of different ways, especially as an alternative to headphones.
