The list of top grossing films of all time is one that doesn't often shift — it's a capsule of important moments in pop culture, if not critical acclaim (one does not preclude the other) and it takes raking in a ton at the box office to make the list. To attain record-breaking success at the box office it takes a unique combination of franchise strength, star-power, and die hard fandom. Here are the highest-grossing films of all time– from superhero odysseys to animated family films, and some race-car heist movies in between.

It seems that James Cameron has secret recipe for high-grossing films. Titanic held the spot for the number one highest grossing film, with $2.2 billion in earnings, until it was beaten by Cameron’s Avatar.

Marvel’s The Avengers
