The mystical world of Pandora created by director James Cameron became a cultural phenomenon and the film that everyone had to see when it was released in 2009. Today it's the reigning highest grossing film — nothing since has come close to toppling its $2.8 billion world-wide record.

It seems that James Cameron has secret recipe for high-grossing films. Titanic held the spot for the number one highest grossing film, with $2.2 billion in earnings, until it was beaten by Cameron’s Avatar.

Star Wars fans had been waiting for the first installment of the third trilogy and it showed at the box office– the film grossed $2.07 billion.

With a jam-packed cast full of fan-favorite superheroes, Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War proved a success for the comic book franchise when it brought in $2.05 billion in worldwide.
