UMaryland Legal Scholars Interview Visit?

Post by bigredforlaw » Wed Feb 16, 2011 4:18 pm

Hey does anyone know anything about the interview process or visit for finalists to Maryland's Legal Scholars Program? The scholarship program is fairly new so there is basically nothing to be found online. I'd really appreciate any insight into what they're looking for! Thanks

+1, I'd love to know as well. I'd also like to know (typically) how much money is awarded and how many students get awards.

Hm so I effectively answered my own question! I thought I'd post a few things here in case anyone was unable to attend the leadership scholars chat yesterday or did not email their questions in.

Candidates are chosen by the Admissions Committee based upon a holistic application review process. Those who demonstrate academic success and leadership skills earned through collegiate, professional and community service experiences are invited to interview.
Scholarships are awarded for three years to full-time students and four years to part-time students. You will be notified of the amount of your scholarship award in the days immediately following your interview. Your initial seat deposit reserving your place in the incoming class will be due shortly thereafter.
The basic requirement of Leadership Scholars is that you stay in good professional and academic standing with the expectation that you will become leaders at the School of Law, as well as within the legal community. On occasion we will request your participation in recruitment efforts and special programs.

The scholarship program has one pot of scholarship money rather than specific scholarships available. This means that the finalists are not competing with each other. Instead, the 2-3 interviewers you speak to will decide whether you get a scholarship and if so, the amount. The admissions person at the chat said that historically the majority of finalists who interview will receive some form of scholarship.

Lastly, they emphasize that this is a program and that scholarship recipients will join a group of distinguished students and alumni. You'll be part of events and other things they hold at the law school.

Hope this helps!

Oh, also you can get up to a full scholarship for your 3 (or 4) years. And I am definitely still interested in hearing about any past interviewers' experiences at the interview day if there are any of you out there.
