New Delhi: Sensor Towers released data ranking the top food and drink apps along with other relevant categories. Zepto, the Indian rapid commerce startup, emerged as the world's second most downloaded mobile app in the aforementioned category last year, based on recent data released by Sensor Tower. The top spot went to the American fast-food chain McDonald's in the food and drinks category followed by Zepto and KFC securing the second and third spot respectively.
The fifth spot was secured by Zomato in the food and grocery category followed by Blinkit coming at the tenth spot in the most downloaded app category. Swiggy ranked at nine in the food and grocery delivery category. The category also encompassed fast food and fast casual eateries, restaurant ordering and delivery, various food delivery services, dining and listing, reviews and reservations, as well as dining and restaurant applications.
As per the Sensor Tower, in the second half of calendar year 2024 the grocery delivery subgenre saw a surge in downloads due to Zepto’s significant 300% growth in India. Zepto saw such a boost in its position owing to its feature of ‘buy now and pay later’ which strengthened its position in the e-commerce space. This is also evident from the app’s surge in average monthly users in the last quarter of 2024, overtaking Blinkit’s user count.
The report also added that the applications within the foods and drinks category saw 353 million downloads in India during CY24, signifying a 43% increase from the previous year. Downloads from India accounted for over 16% of total global downloads in that category. India has shown great performance in other categories as well, including retail, video streaming, financial services and many more.
