The 51-year-old cop, from Harlow, Essex, admitted the cash was stolen from Claudio's wallet while it was "in evidence" between September 7 and September 14.

Carter today arrived at Wood Green Crown Court, north London, where he hid his face behind a Covid-style mask and sunglasses.

He pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.

Thief Carter has been granted bail ahead of his sentencing at the same court on September 13.

Judge Daniel Fugallo, who also ordered a pre-sentence report said: "I have to make absolutely clear that an immediate custodial sentence seems the likely outcome in this case.

"Neither the ordering of the report nor the fact that I am granting you bail should be taken as any indication to the type of sentence you will receive."

Carter, who is based with the Met's North Area Command Unit covering Enfield and Haringey, was previously suspended.
