The Derby goalie's reaction - where he pleaded with the ref to confirm if VAR had deemed his save legitimate before going to celebrate with his onrushing teammates - quickly became an iconic moment.

And a viral video later emerged of the Glaswegian stopper leading a squad conga in the hotel, as the players chanted his name to the tune of Whigfield's Saturday Night.

Marshall burst onto the scene as a teenager for boyhood heroes Celtic, with two stunning displays against Barcelona helping the Hoops dump the Catalan giants out of the Uefa Cup in 2004.

He has spent most of his career in the Championship and was briefly the record-holder for the longest ever Scotland career last year, until goalkeeping rival Craig Gordon played the next match.

Here's David Marshall's story so far...

How old is David Marshall?

Marshall turned 36 earlier this year, and is the second oldest player in Scotland's Euro 2020 squad, behind Gordon.

He was born in Glasgow's east end and raised in Riddrie.

Who has David Marshall played for?

The lifelong Celtic supporter joined the club's academy as a youngster, making his debut in February 2003, aged 17, in the Scottish Cup against St Johnstone at Parkhead.

Just over a year later, he was subbed on against Barcelona, after Rab Douglas was sent off, helping the Hoops to a 1-0.

Marshall's performance in the return leg was even better, making the difference with a string of saves to keep the likes of Ronaldinho, Luis Enrique and Luis Garcia out as Celtic went through 1-0 on aggregate.

He moved to Norwich City on loan in 2007, before making the deal permanent that summer.

Next, he spent seven full seasons at Cardiff City after a £500,000 transfer, becoming a fans' favourite as they gained promotion to the Premier League for the first time.

He signed for Hull City for £5million in 2016, before going to Wigan Athletic in 2019 and then moving to current club Derby County last year, where he was made captain after Wayne Rooney became manager.

Marshall's Scotland debut came in August 2004, in a 3-0 loss to Hungary, where he scored an own goal after the ball was cleared off him and into the net.

He now has 44 Scotland caps and could have had many more, had he not spent much of his 16-year international career behind top goalies Gordon and Allan McGregor.

He cemented his spot as Steve Clarke's number one in 2019, and was the shootout hero in the Euro 2020 playoff semi final against Israel, before his now-iconic save from Mitrovic in the final.

What is his market value?

As a goalkeeper reaching the latter stage of his career, Marshall would not expect to command a huge transfer fee.

With one year left on his Derby contract, Transfermarkt value him at £225,000.

He kept nine clean sheets in 33 games for the Rams last season, and the club side - and Scotland, of course - know his importance goes way beyond monetary value.

Does David Marshall have a girlfriend?

Marshall is married to Michelle Marshall, from Glasgow.

The couple have a daughter, Bella Rose, and a son.

Michelle caused a stir in 2017 when she jokingly tweeted about Cardiff needing a goalie, after a difficult few months at the start of his Hull career.

Bluebirds fans thought it might be a hint at a return for their hero, while some Tigers supporters would have been happy to see him leave.

Michelle later apologised, saying it was just a joke and that she was homesick, after spending a number of years in South Wales.
