About Samuel Gompers
Samuel Gompers’ involvement in a debate club for teenage boys that he formed at 13 years old proved instrumental in his later career as a labor union leader. He learnt the cigar making trade from his father while assisting his home business. He was just 14 years old when he joined the Cigar Makers Local Union No. 15, his first labor union. At 23 years old, he got employed by a reputable cigar company, David Hirsch & Company. He is best remembered as a founder of the American Federation of Labor, for which he served as president from 1886 to 1894 and then from 1895 until he died.
Family Life
His parents were Solomon Gumpertz and Sarah Root. He married Sophia Julian, who was his co-worker in a cigar company. Six of their children survived infancy. She died in 1920. He later married Gertrude Gleaves.
Death
He died on December 13, 1924 after struggling with diabetes, uremia and congestive heart failure.
