Author and theologian long associated with the Union Theological Seminary , where he began his leaching in 1930, REINHOLD NIEBUHR wrote his first article for the ATLANTIC in 1916 and since then has gone on to establish himself in his books, as in his addresses, as a leading spokesman for Protestants in America.

He was ordained in 1915 and took up his first and only pastorate in the Bethel Evangelical Church of Detroit, where over a period of thirteen years the membership mounted from forty to more than eight hundred. In his lectures, as in his books, Dr. Niebuhr has carried on an intellect tad crusade against the complacencies of an age of reason.

Statistics showing the growth of Protestant Church membership are impressive. But has there been a corresponding increase in the influence of Protestantism on the life of the nation? Or has the Church succumbed to the secularism which is the great enemy of religion today? For the answer to these imperative questions we turn to REINHOLD NIEBUHR,who was ordained to the ministry in 1915, served as a pastor in Detroit, and was then called to Union Theological Seminary, where he has been a Professor of Applied Christianity since 1930.
