Charlotte Forten Grimké
Charlotte Forten Grimké was an abolitionist, a poet, an educator, and a civil-rights activist. She was born into a wealthy family of African American abolitionists and received a private education. In 1864, The Atlantic published her essays about teaching freed slaves on the islands off of South Carolina.
