DOBINSONS IMS SUSPENSION INSTALL & RIVIEW : A NEW YEAR GIFT TO MY JIMNY AND MYSELF PROLOGUE : After the fiasco that I had with the 3 Door Kit Tough Dog Lift Kit installed on the Jimny and subsequent sales return (August 2024), which also left a distinct bad taste on both the entire dealings with the Tough Dog management and the product quality, I now wanted a suspension that ticked the following boxes:
- Reputed Suspension manufacturer with a good name and market feedback from diverse markets.
- Good Pre & After Sales Support. A responsive company and personnel.
- Tried and tested quality suspension with own R&D and extensive testing before market release.
With these in mind and a lot of time spent I narrowed it down to OME 40 mm Lift Kit for the 5 door. But ARB being ARB are super slow & much like a government organization, were taking their own sweet time in even commenting on delivery timelines to India though the configuration that I wanted was available for sale October 2024 onward. We were now looking at tentative delivery March/April 2025. I am a patient man but this exceeded all normal levels of patience that one might have after all would the wait be worthwhile?
Also having driven on a after market suspension driving with the OE suspension is not a comparable drive at all. A good suspension lift is one that genuinely makes for improved stability and handling both on-road and on road compared to the stock. And it had been 5 months of riding on the OE suspension after taking off Tough Dog . I willing to wait, but not endlessly, so my search continued researching for another option while waiting for OME.
By chance stumbled upon Dobinsons in the US 4X4 forums. A lot of people had installed the Dobinsons and were super happy and also a fair number had installed the Dobinsons coils with the OME Suspension (another discovery was sag, an issue that is there with the OMEs because of lower spring rates comparatively to give a softer ride) . Well, these were the Eureka moments and my search now shifted to Dobinsons.
About Dobinsons : was founded by Reg Dobinson in 1953. They also have a large Rockhampton factory besides factories in other parts of the world. They are an up and coming brand in the 4X4 world and have already made a name for themselves by delivering quality products.
Dobinsons has 2 options available in the suspension for the 5 Door Jimny:
- Twin Tube Nitro-gas Long Travel.
- IMS Mono Tube Long Travel.
Well now I was getting greedy. why not get a Monotube suspension instead of the twin tube? OME for the Jimny has only one option - Twin Tube Nitro-gas. They however do have Monotubes for the higher segment in 4X4s and are called the MT series (Monotube short form).
The difference between the Twin Tube and the Monotube is brilliantly explained in the ARB website: I now quote from the ARB website
: As the name suggests, the twin tube has a second internal tube inside the shock to separate oil and nitrogen gas. This is a proven technology that works very well, but has its limitations around oil volume and tuning capability due to the piston and overall internal volume being smaller due to having to house a second tube. A monotube shock absorber is a single body design, which utilizes a floating piston at the top of the shock body to separate the oil and nitrogen gas. This allows a much larger amount of oil to be inside the shock absorber, which not only limits the shock fade, but also increases the overall size of the piston. This increase gives our engineers a huge scope for
tuning, allowing us to tune your vehicle perfectly.
The IMS and the Twin Tube also have certain other differences: IMS having a larger piston and superior build quality along with being completely rebuildable. Internal monotube shocks eliminate foaming by using a single, larger chamber containing both the hydraulic fluid and gas separated by a floating piston. This prevents the oil and gas from mixing and allows for larger oil volume and better heat dissipation. Collectively this provides more damping, more travel, and a much more stable shock performance over a variety of terrains and environments. There are a number of benefits of a monotube set up over twin tubes. As their name suggests, twin-tube shocks have two chambers, one containing hydraulic fluid and the other containing gas. Fluid flows between the two chambers under pressure, providing shock dampening. If the shock compression occurs rapidly, the fluid and gas can mix, called foaming. This majorly impacts the shock performance and decreases ride quality.
Also the IMS is a linear shock. The Bilsteins for example are regressive and you also have progressive shocks. Digressive shocks are bad at small bumps and large bumps, but good at handling and g-outs. Progressive shocks are good at small bumps and big hits, but bad at handling and g-outs. Linear shocks provide the best all around performance.

The IMS SHOCKS
The IMS shocks are basically a premium monotube shock with a really nice build quality. These shocks easily weigh about twice that of the all the twin tube shocks. Big bore, heavy walls, and a big shaft. They are made of super strong, 3mm thick DOM bodies that are seamless and threaded on their struts, which is a very desirable feature.
One of the biggest benefits of Dobinsons is they manufacture in their owned factories, the coils (made in Australia) as well as their shocks something that the other manufacturers outsource to 3rd party factories. The prices of the twin tube OME kit and Dobinsons IMS were almost similar. By now I was sold on Dobinsons.. Self Imported the Dobinsons 40 mm lift kit as well as HardRace Front Adjustable Radius Arms. THE COMPONENTS USED FOR SUSPENSION UPGRADE: DOBINSON 40 mm lift kit installed consisting of : - Front Linear Coil (40mm Lift) - C57-170.
- IMS Monotube Shock Long Travel Front - IMS57-50617.
- Castor Correction Bushes - WA57-511K . Changed to Hardrace Q0560.
- Crossmember Drop Kit - WA57-580 - An essential component as lifting the Jimny and adding castor correction bushes, the propeller shaft moves closer to the cross member and this means that when you go over road humps at speed or at extreme articulation the two knock together briefly.
- Rear Linear Coil (40mm Lift) - C57-171.
- IMS Monotube Shock Long Travel Rear - IMS57-50618.
The Suspension Kit : IMS Shocks Hardrace Front Castor Correction Radius Arms : Q0560.
About the product: The HARDRACE radius arm is designed for Jimnys with 2-3" lift. The arm features built-in caster increase and adjustment mechanism to maintain factory alignment setting, allowing greater wheel clearance, axle movement and handling performance after suspension lifts. ED coated and painted high strength construction and harden rubber bushing, these arms provide superior strength and durability along with solid driving response.
The caster correction bushes is not something I am comfortable with, although they serve the purpose fine but might still need to be corrected from time to time which means taking out the Radius Arms and a visit to the lathe center for re-installation. The Radius Arms is a better solution all around.
The only prohibitive portion was the comparative cost. Since I wanted the best of everything and a longer lasting solution, I went ahead and ordered them. The Radius Arms have caster correction built into them which means that the bushings will not wear as fast as the poly bushes and rubber bushes always provide a more comfortable ride. Plus the OE bushes will fit once they need replacement a big plus. Since I am going the Teal colour on the Dobinsons Coils I thought the Blue of Hardrace makes the underbody of the Jimny more colourful
Hardrace Correction Radius Arms
Was not sure that I would get the Hardarce on time as they were ordered from Europe so ordered Castor Correction Bushes as well made by Dobinsons but both came into India around the same time. Will look at selling the caster bushes now as they are made of hardened rubber and very well built, at a superb price too.
Panhard Correction Bracket:
Opted for the fixed panhard correction bracket as a fixed solution IMO is better than having one that is adjustable in the longer run. Its more of a
fill it shut it forget it kind of a product. This is for a 40 mm lift kit.
Extended Brake Hose Pipes : Braided steel extended brake hose pipes X 4 2 in the front and 2 in the rear. These were already installed so this was omitted from the install.
INSTALLATION:
Pretty Straight forward installation. Changed all the nuts and bolts as well as since reusing most of them of them is not recommended by Maruti/Suzuki as well. The rear shocks were also installed inverted as the bottom would have touched. This is because of the large diameter of the IMS (photo underneath). The seat of the rear shocks & the Front Coil bottom plastic noise dampers were replaced as well with new ones (photos under). After installation all the nuts and bolts were tightened to the factory recommended torques.

Certainly a far superior ride ride than my previous Tough Dog (too stiff and bouncy) and OME (too much of body roll) (rode a friends). Also prices for their product punch one product level higher compared to other brands.
The Dobinsons IMS kit performs exactly as I would expect of a high-quality aftermarket suspension. It has significantly reduced the body roll when on tar/off road and cornering, as well as the nose dive when braking hard. The body roll which is a common feature of the body on frame chassis is almost gone the Jimny now behaves much like a monocoque SUV.
Compared to the the Tough Dog twin-tube shocks, it feels just as planted, but the progressive nature of the valving has taken away some of the harshnesss. Speed bumps and potholes are smoother now, as well as an overall more comfortable ride compared to my previous Tough Dog twin-tube shocks. In fact, they offer a firm, planted, and confidence-inspiring feel.
I have found that suspension choices are often very subjective, and will vary greatly based on how you use your vehicle. For some, a very stiff ride is best because they want the best handling and on-road characteristics. Others may want a super plush ride and are willing to put up with a little body roll and nose dive. Dobinsons I feel are right in the middle. I wanted something that walked the line between on-road handling and comfort and performance off-road, and I really feel like the Dobinsons IMS nails that for me.
IMS also I feel provides a more comfortable and forgiving ride than linear or digressive twin-tube shocks. Good in daily driving and yet offering a superior ride off roading.
The way to describe the ride in short is
FIRM BUT PLUSH.
Thank the good lord for OME delaying their delivery.
At least I will always thank OME for helping me choose Dobinsons.
The Jimny now rides on Dobbies and Hardrace and the ride is one superb ride. After all my Jimny and I wanted to lift our game and lifted our game it has.....
