Syracuse, N.Y. -- Forecasters are growing increasingly concerned about the possibility of damaging thunderstorms this afternoon, less than a week after seven tornadoes slammed Upstate New York.

“There is increasing confidence that an area of strong thunderstorms will move across the region this afternoon and evening,” the National Weather Service’s Buffalo office said in issuing a special weather alert. “These storms will have the potential to produce damaging winds in excess of 60 mph, torrential downpours, and dangerous lightning.”
