Canastota, N.Y. — One person was found dead Tuesday in Canastota after a storm with damaging winds rolled through the village.
The storm carved a narrow path, leaving behind downed trees, homes with torn roofs, flipped cars and at least one garage that collapsed, said Jeremy Ryan, Canastota’s administrator.
Most of the damage is centered along Barlow Street, which runs east-west on the western part of Canastota, Ryan said. A mandatory evacuation has been ordered for the street.
A person was found dead around 3 p.m. outside their home near Barlow Street, Ryan said.
Officials believe the death is weather-related, he said. He would not elaborate.
Officials did not identify the person. They are working to notify the victim’s family.
The village is working with the Red Cross and county’s Office of Emergency Management to set up emergency shelters.
A state of emergency is in place for Canastota and the northern part of Madison County.
