This large, wood-paneled living room is both cozy and elegant. Its generous dimensions create several seating areas that are anchored by a jewel-toned, two-sided sofa in velvet. The addition of Vladimir Kagan chairs, a coffee table by Mastercraft, among other high-end vintage furniture and decor, imbue the space with sophisticated comfort.

Pattern play takes center stage in this kitchen. Note how the chair design mirrors the movement of the veining in the countertops and the reach of the tree limbs beyond those fabulously expansive windows. From the ceiling beams to the grout lines on the tiled floor, pattern rules supreme.

The homeowners purchased a sprawling midcentury modern home in 2020, and we were lucky to write about it for our spring issue. The couple are design enthusiasts—and their appreciation for the midcentury period is evident throughout their 1949-built house. In the family room, an assemblage of chic furnishings and accessories are set along an electrifying blue background. “My design is what I like and what makes me happy,” says owner Marcie Vantine.

Architecture, color, impact…it’s all here in this combination children’s bedroom and playroom. The custom-designed built-in bookshelves are made to fit the room’s architecture (it's a former attic space) and are highlighted with a coral paint color and bright floral wallpaper. What little girl wouldn't love to spend time in this space?

The designer thought through so many details when designing this small children's bathroom: the practical nature of the tiled wall behind the faucet, the high-gloss wall panel finish that's easy to clean, the darling cast-iron sink, while new, pays homage to those originally found in this 1900s Colonial house.

“The organization was to create a large concrete box and put a skinny house inside it to create a courtyard in every corner,” says architect Carl Safe of the design of this home. This sunken courtyard with a built-in fountain offers easy access to the outdoors, creating that much saught-after indoor/outdoor lifestyle.
