Luigi Mangione has become one of the most discussed names in recent weeks, and even before the court proceedings have concluded in the case, ABC is coming out with its special chronicling the murder of UnitedHealthcare's chief executive Brian Thompson. The 26-year-old is being flown from Pennsylvania to New York and is expected to appear in federal court later today.
However, ABC is chronicling the ongoing case in its upcoming special, titled Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder, which premieres at 10 p.m. EST on Thursday, December 19, 2024. It's a special edition of its hit true-crime show 20/20.
That has invited the wrath of those following the case, as most believe that it's too soon to have a special on the murder, and judging by previews, many fans deemed the narrative of Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder one-sided.
Reddit user @browngirlygirl summed it up:
"No one has enough info on this to make a documentary. What happened to innocent until proven guilty?"
Many other fans stepped up to criticize this move as well, and many debated how it would negatively impact the image of the accused killer in the ongoing court proceedings.
"Yeah this is going to be bad for him. They're going to spin this into him being a psycho. Nothing we don't already know and a whole of "his fans" online making edits and art of him. F*ck all of this. Media took control of the narrative and have silenced everybody."- another user reasoned.
"Be prepared for a very manipilative edition of 20/20. If they paint him as a villain, I'll stop watching them, too."- another user said.
"Oh goody more one sided story propaganda can't wait to not tun"- another user wrote.
"It's crazy how in this preview they are talking about him as if he's the murderer. Convicted before trial. Can they even do this??? Doesn't seem fair or right at all. I wonder if it would impact the trial."- another user noted.
The preview of Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder is already out, and it seems to have invited a lot of negative reactions. It's yet to be seen how the special is perceived after it airs.
Why are fans fuming about Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder?
Although multiple documentaries have been announced about the high-profile murder of Brian Thompson and the man behind it, Luigi Mangione, this one has been singled out because it's airing very early in the case.
With most of the trial still pending and things being far from decided, the upcoming ABC special has invited outrage because it already seems to be decided on its stance even before the trial has given any conclusive results.
ABC's 20/20 has a reputation, and this special edition may actually surprise fans with an unbiased opinion and coverage of the case, but ahead of the premiere, it's impossible to determine which way things will go.
Manhunt: Luigi Mangione and the CEO Murder will premiere at 10 p.m. on ABC. Stay tuned for more updates.
