Tony Khan: A Brief Biography

Antony Rafiq Khan, commonly known as Tony Khan, is an American businessman and sports promoter best known as the founder and co-owner of All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

Besides AEW, Khan holds executive roles in NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars and EPL’s Fulham, the two sporting clubs owned by his father Shahid Khan. In addition to AEW, Khan also owns Ring of Honor (ROH), which he acquired in 2022.

Early Life

Tony Khan was born in Illinois, United States on the 10th of October, 1982. His father is Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan and his mother is Ann Carlson, who is an American. Shahid Khan owns Flex-N-Gate and is among the richest persons in the world.

Business Career

Other than Pro-Wrestling

After Shahid Khan purchased Jacksonville Jaguars in National Football League (NFL), his son joined the same where he currently serves as the Senior President of Football and Analytics.

In 2017, Tony Khan also joined Fulham, an English football club owned by his father. He serves as the vice-chairman and director of Football Operations at the club. Under his direction, Fulham got promoted to the English Premier League, the highest level of professional football in the country.

All Elite Wrestling (AEW) and Ring of Honor (ROH)

Tony Khan has been a fan of pro wrestling for years. The American businessman filed for several trademarks in April 2018 for a new company, soon revealed to be a pro-wrestling promotion. The debut of AEW stems from a statement made by renowned journalist Dave Meltzer.

In May 2017, he made a comment that no promotion other than WWE could sell more than 10,000 tickets since WCW’s closure. Ring of Honor’s wrestler Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks responded to the statement by holding an event called All In in September 2018 featuring stars from ROH, Indies and other big free agents.

The event sold more than 11,000 tickets and was sold out within 30 minutes of tickets going live. This success paved the way for a new promotion in the form of AEW, which was co-founded by Tony Khan and Shahid Khan with the help of Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks, who served as the co-Executive Vice Presidents of the company.

The first event took place on May 25, 2019. With the premier of Double or Nothing, the pro wrestling journey of Tony Khan began and so did his war with WWE. From bringing in various former WWE Superstars to the much-popular Wednesday Night Wars between NXT and AEW Dynamite, the battle between WWE and AEW will only become more and more interesting as time goes on.

Tony Khan has always worked alongside other promotions such as Impact Wrestling, RevPro Wrestling, Ring of Honor, and New Japan Pro Wrestling including organizing mutual PPVs such as Forbidden Door.

On March 2, 2022, Khan made a shocking announcement. He announced that he had bought Ring of Honor and currently operates both promotions, where the roster of the two often interact in AEW programming.
