Excellence in Action: Expanding Unified Champion Schools Across Latin America

In July 2024, Special Olympics Global Center for Inclusion in Education and Special Olympics Argentina hosted the Excellence in Action: Expanding Unified Champion Schools workshop, with support from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan , president of the United Arab Emirates, an event aimed at introducing and expanding Unified Champion Schools (UCS) programming.

Day One: 1 July

The event opened with a keynote address from Mr. Rashed Alhmoudi, Representative of the UAE Embassy in Argentina, who warmly welcomed the participants.

Participants explored the fundamental steps for launching UCS programming. Guided by the expertise of Special Olympics Argentina, they explored effective implementation strategies.

“[We are] happy to share with leaders of the region, promoting the development of more inclusive educational communities,” said Mercedes Fielder, Executive Director Special Olympics Argentina .

In particular, the youth gained insights into the importance of leadership and their pivotal role in scaling UCS within their countries. Additionally, both Youth Leaders and Program staff learned about fostering inclusive mindsets and behaviors, an essential framework for the expansion of UCS.

Day One: 2 July

The second day was packed with a strong emphasis on Unified Sports . Participants not only learned the steps to initiate Unified Sports in schools but also experienced its impact firsthand through a Unified Football match. Through this, participants learned leadership activities that emphasized communication and teamwork. The day concluded with an immersive cultural experience as the group toured the iconic Teatro Colón, soaking in the rich heritage of Buenos Aires. Adult leaders joined in a youth leadership activity, gaining practical exercises to teach collaboration, communication, and teamwork to young people.

Day One: 3 July

On the final day, the focus shifted to practical application. Program staff and Youth Leaders collaborated to create actionable plans for launching UCS programming in their respective countries. Local implementers from Special Olympics Argentina shared best practices and techniques, offering insights on how to successfully launch and expand UCS.

Throughout these three days the Excellence in Action: Expanding Unified Champion Schools workshop not only equipped participants with the knowledge and tools needed for UCS expansion but also fostered unity and inclusion.

“The development of this event reinforces the region's commitment to expanding the work of UCS, where we empower Program leaders and provide them with the tools to become agents of change in favor of inclusive education in their Programs and countries,” said Johamy Alabi, Special Olympics Latin America Director Organizational Development. “We use sports and youth empowerment as vehicles for social inclusion in our communities.”

The event showcased the collective commitment to building a more inclusive world through education and sports.
