Urban haat at belapur
Urban Haat is an ever-permanent fair for Crafts, Food
and Cultural Activities. The craftsmen from various areas and
the cultural happenings provide a panoramic view of richness
and diversity of handicrafts and artifacts. The concept of
urban haat is to provide space to artisan and craftsmen of
india to exhibit and sell their handicrafts, therefore cutting
the middle agencies.
Urban haat serves as a
regular place for artisans
to exhibit and sell their art
such as handicrafts,
handloom, leather goods,
hand carved wooden
furniture etc.
Urban haat is located
in belapur at the centre of
navi Mumbai. The site is next
the cbd railway station.

Location: the site is near to the belapur railway
station in sector 29.the site is located at
croner of cross junction of nirmaladevi
marg and sakaram patil marg.
Topography: Undulating terrain with hill at the centre
and slope towards the surrounding roads.
The site provides panoramic view of the
areas surrounding it.
Climate: The climate here is tropical. During most
months of the year, there is significant
rainfall in Navi Mumbai. The average annual
temperature in Navi Mumbai is 26.8 °C. The
rainfall here averages 3044 mm.
Surroundings: belapur is planned as central commercial
and cultural centre for people of navi
Mumbai. Raigad bhavan, Cidco bhavan,
nmmc, reserve bank of india, mtnl are some
of the administrative offices which are
situated in belapur. Artist village which is
low cost housing for artisans is located in
belapur. With metro project being
implemented in navi Mumbai there is great
chances of development in all the sectors.
Belapur is also surrounded by lush
greenery all around.
Type of planning and
design concept
The site is hilly terrain which is sloping towards the
main roads. The planning is done keeping in mind the
pedestrians circulation and site contours. the site is
planned in such a way that it minimise the excavation cost
by building a retaining wall around the site and locating
structural components at the periphery of the wall.
cluster planning is incorporated for designing of
stalls. Local construction method is used in the urban
haat project in belapur. the height of structures are
limited to one storey.
Use of contours is visible in planning of urban haat.
Different levels that are created on the site separates
different activities taking place simultaneously.
Natural landscape is maintained wherever possible on
the site. bamboo trees is planted throughout the site.
Curbing around trees and plants is done to prevent any
damage to the trees. With abundance of nature in place,
the urban haat has become popular among nature lovers
and shop goers in the city.
Urban haat at belapur gives the city shop goers a
varied experience of shopping in natural surrounding. The
visitors are intimidated by the feeling of exclusion and
peaceful
environment with
sound of classical
music reaching to
their ears. People
feel close to
nature while
walking along the
pedestrian pathway
looking at stalls
selling
handicrafts on one
side and nature on
the other.

area of each stall is fixed to15 sqm considering the
space required for artists for displaying, storage and
other household activities.
Each cluster has two stalls sharing a common rubble
wall and two vault has been constructed as a roof which
are supported by beams resting on these walls.
The vault roof is made of bricks and concrete and
pieces of coloured ceramic tiles used for surface
treatment. Exposed rubble walls and vault roofing treated
with coloured ceramic tiles is the main design features of
the clusters.

The main objective of urban haat is to promote and sell
indian arts and crafts in urban areas by setting up stalls
and exhibition centre for artists from different parts of
india.
The urban haat complex is provided with a food court
which aims to organise food festivals. In food festivals,
visitors can experience crusines from different part of the
country. Other cultural activities such as music concerts,
and social awareness programs are held in the
amphitheatre inside urban haat.
All events are timely organised throughout the month
and event information is displayed to people who visit the
place. Spaces and area are as follows:
