Why Prince Andrew & Sarah Ferguson’s Relationship Seems To Be More Than a Just Friends Situation

On July 23, 1986, Sarah Ferguson walked down the aisle to marry Prince Andrew and become the Duke and Duchess of York. Their wedded bliss didn’t last very long, the couple divorced 10 years later, but their friendship has endured over the last 38 years. They remain so close that the rumors about their relationship persist to this day, especially since they are roommates at Royal Lodge.

U.K. journalist Dan Wootton fanned the flames in 2019 when he claimed that the duo was “friends with benefits” on the Lorraine show, via the Mirror. While it was “not a passionate romance,” Ferguson and Andrew were “not seeing anyone else.” Wootton wasn’t done spilling the tea, though — he had more dish to share. “They have separate bedrooms at Royal Lodge – but it’s more about the deepest form of friendship,” he added. “It’s a very unusual relationship for a divorced couple, especially to the outside world, but they’re utterly devoted and would defend each other to the death.”

While Ferguson might be avoiding her ex-husband’s array of teddy bears in his bedroom (and who wouldn’t?!), neither of them has downplayed the persistent stories about them possibly remarrying in the future. “It seems inevitable now that they will just formalize it within a few years and remarry. They live in the same house, they spend all their time together, they adore the children, they don’t ever argue,” one of Duke of York’s pals told The Daily Beast in December 2023.

King Charles III is reportedly open to his younger brother remarrying, especially in the wake of his Jeffery Epstein association. A wedding could take some of the heat off of the scandal, which Ferguson has supported him through. Ferguson gushed about loyalty to Andrew in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2018.

“We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world. We’re divorced to each other, not from each other,” she explained. “My duty is to him. I am so proud of him. I stand by him and always will. The way we are is our fairytale. The Yorks are a united family. We’ve shown it.” That close bond is why everyone whispers that they are more than just friends behind closed doors. While many royal critics criticize Ferguson for sticking by a man with sexual abuse allegations, she isn’t wavering in her commitment to him — despite the uncomfortable controversies.
