Princess Charlotte made her academic debut today, which was a big deal in the royal family. And though we were just as enthralled with those sweet school drop-off photos as the rest of the world was, we couldn’t help but fixate on Kate Middleton’s first day of school style. The Duchess of Cambridge looked smashing walking Charlotte and big bro Prince George into Thomas’s Battersea school, so, naturally, we had to dig up the details on her breezy back-to-school mom style. Well — royal mom style, since, let’s be real, most of us roll through school drop-off in sweatpants and flip-flops.
First things first, that hair! In place of her usual locks, Kate strolled into Thomas’s Battersea rocking a flouncy blow-out. Stylist James Johnson told the U.K.’s Daily Mail that Kate’s hair has transitioned from a more “polished” summer style to a more practical “working mum look” with a “90’s on-trend flick.”
Not only that, but her color also seemed lighter and warmer than usual. While it’s possible the sun could have simply been hitting her hair in a way that made her hair appear lightened, it certainly seems as though the Duchess opted for a fall update. Hollywood hair colorist Rita Hazan pointed out to Harper’s Bazaar that Kate’s warmer blonde hue and honey-toned highlights are in this fall.

As for Kate’s first day of school ensemble, let’s just say it’s a far cry from what I looked like dropping my daughter off for her first day of school. The Duchess opted for a picture-perfect long-sleeve floral Michael Kors dress. Look familiar? Kate wore it to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding rehearsal back in May 2018, so it’s something she recycled for school drop-off (another thing to love about her). But what made the dress stand out even more on Thursday was Kate’s unexpected but utterly chic choice to cinch the dress with a sleek black belt, pulling together the look by matching her pumps.
All in all, we’d say Kate pretty much nailed the whole back-to-school-mom-drop-off aesthetic — even if she makes the rest of us (it’s me, the rest of us is me) look like chumps.
