What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.

Shubhra Gupta The Indian Express Loki is the only character who makes himself new and interesting. When he is around, Thor: The Dark World becomes a different film altogether. You wish there was more of him. The rest of it is metal clanking. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 18, 2019 Full Review Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk This feels like a really, really, expensive episode of Doctor Who. In a good way. Rated: 4/5 Sep 6, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire Save for Hiddleston's too-brief supporting turn, this is mighty forgettable stuff, a by-the-numbers sequel to what was already the slightest and least entertaining of the 'Avengers' components. Jun 18, 2016 Full Review JD Duran InSession Film Thor: The Dark World is a great continuation in the Marvel Universe and it’s a better direction than Iron Man 3. Rated: A- Aug 15, 2024 Full Review Joseph Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast The high-fantasy worldbuilding and story align with what the Norse mythological superhero's adventures should be – generic villain notwithstanding. Rated: 4/5 Apr 16, 2024 Full Review Cory Woodroof For the Win (USA Today) It’s by no means a great movie or anything, but it’s got a very good Tom Hiddleston performance and moves at a satisfying clip. William B A sort of disappointing sequel to Thor, not a great entry for the MCU, not a good movie for MARVEL in general, but it still has its moments. This is still the weakest entry in Thor series. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/11/24 Full Review DZ E 69/100 My least favorite MCU Movie so far Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review George G Forgettable. I genuinely do not remember what this movie was about. I remember all the others including the one that sucked. I’m giving it a mutual review because it didn’t make a bad or good impression. Simply forgettable. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/18/24 Full Review Nick R Tom Hiddleston is great as Loki in this movie. That's it. That's the only thing really worth mentioning about one of the MCU's most forgettable and lifeless projects. The villain is remembered by no one, the action is dull, and the movie lacks the spark that future Thor films will bring. Ultimately, 'Thor the Dark World' only exists to briefly setup the future of the Infinity Stones and Loki's return. That's all you need to know because they'll just recap it for you in future movies anyway. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review George B The only reason this movie gets 1 star is because of a man named Tom Hiddleston. He delivers a great supporting role in this absolutely terrible film. The movie is so forgettable, and it's a sequel that ranks among the worst MCU films. Loki was enjoyable, but he was still 100% better in The Avengers. I really liked the line: "Hello, Mother, have I made you proud?" He demands your attention—his eyes are wicked, and his grin is larger than ever. He steals the show here. It's a shame the rest of the movie sucked. The acting is terrible. The film opens with one of the worst prologues. Anthony Hopkins was clearly only there for the paycheck, delivering lines about the mouth of the Aether and noble armies of Asgard. At that moment, I realized this movie was going to suck. Unlike the prologues in Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, we get this slow, boring setup that tries to do too much. The narrative just feels messy. We get emo Thor, who’s sad that he can't see Jane Foster (I would be too). I don't blame Natalie Portman for wanting out of this movie, but she had to return because her contract wasn’t over yet. The plot finds Jane Foster discovering a wormhole and getting a force sucked into her. In order to save her, Thor must bring her back to his home, making this basically the same movie as Crocodile Dundee 2 lol. Thor: The Dark World is an extremely ugly-looking film, though I do like some of the production design. This is one of those movies you watch and completely forget about 3 seconds later. The film has an amazing cast, but they are ultimately wasted. The villain in this movie sucked and was by far the worst in the MCU so far. However, something I did like was Loki and Thor's relationship—their banter is funny, and I love the scene where Loki turns into Captain America. Loki's death was pretty good but felt underwhelming, especially when you know his fate. In conclusion, stay clear of this movie—it’s 100% not worth your time. Overall: 0.7/10 Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review Audience Member There's a reason why the Thor movies are always playing on TNT and TBS.
