Critics Consensus

Restless, visually sleek, and powered by a lithe star performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, Nightcrawler offers dark, thought-provoking thrills.

Shadow and Act Staff Shadow and Act Although I was able to put aside my knowledge that nothing occurring in this film would happen in reality, there are moments in the film where I was pulled out of it... Sep 13, 2022 Full Review Dwight Brown National Newspaper Publishers Association Intriguing, unnerving and haunting. Mar 7, 2017 Full Review Emily St. James Vox Nightcrawler, on its surface, is a relatively straightforward thriller, built around a slightly improbable but very effective main character, a man who starts as an antihero and plunges straight ahead toward villainy. Sep 26, 2016 Full Review Calum Cooper Movie Marker A riveting, rich and masterfully assembled work of film noir, its gripping commentary and visuals are surpassed only by Gyllenhaal’s tremendous performance. Rated: 5/5 Sep 26, 2024 Full Review Brendan Cassidy InSession Film The second half of this film is some of the most tense filmmaking I’ve seen in many years... Jun 17, 2024 Full Review John Flickinger The Flick Pick (Youtube) Indulge in the enigmatic charm of Gyllenhaal portraying an oddly likable sociopath, coupled with dark humor and a riveting yet straightforward plot. mark g Should have won Oscar, best picture of 2014. Stylish, topical, gripping. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Fer S Good movie, not great. The ending was kind of disappointing. It does feature a short but great car chase scene. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/28/24 Full Review Jay N Absolutely no idea why this film is so well regarded. Unbelievable storyline, no real drama development of any of the supporting characters and a weak ending. Jake has turned into a repetitive, 2 dimensional actor who pulls the same acting chops in every film, this is a perfect example of that. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/28/24 Full Review Zackary T One of the most convincing portrayals of pure unadulterated psychopathy ever captured in a feature film. This is One of the greatest films of the 21st century Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/05/24 Full Review George B Dan Gilroy's thriller "Nightcrawler" is about an amature cameraman who decides to start a small business; he is incredibly deciduous, manipulating, and exploding. This film is shot by PTA's cinematographer Robert Elswit; the cinematography is incredibly eeri. It's a film about obsession and lonleyness and would play as a perfect double feature to a film like Taxi Driver. Summary: Lou Bloom is portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, and even though he is the protagonist, you find yourself not wanting to root for him. He goes from Job to Job, but eventually runs into a camera crew shooting a car crash. When he meets the lead TV cameraman (Bill Paxton), he then buys a police radio and goes around filming house fires and murders, trying to find the highest bidder. This is when he meets the news director, Nina (played by René Russo). She takes what he has to avoid getting fired; she speaks Nicole about Lou and feels a slight connection with him. She does not really notice how crazy he is until he threatens her later on in the movie. Nightcrawler is a neon-lit descent into the abyss of modern ambitio, a neo-noir that is incredibly unsettling. This is one of those movies that you wait until the studo logos at the end just because you have no idea what you just watched. Jake Gyllenhalls Lou Bloom plays the ultimate antihero, sort of like Travis Bickle; he is incredibly charismatic and dynamically driven. Dan's direction is incredible, and the editing is amazing and just so smooth. There are some good capitalism themes as well. Lou's journey from a petty theif to a manipulative news reporter is both horrifying and disturbing. Every frame of this movie is increibly thrilling, and you sit there wondering what he will do next. The soundtrack is also incredible; James Newton's retro/pop is the perfect backdrop to the film. Overall Nightcrawler is a thrilling, twisted, well editied, acted and directed film, that I would deffinatly consider giving a rewatch somtime. 9.6/10.
