What to Know

Critics Consensus

A humorous cocktail with a twist of coming-of-age drama, My Old Ass doesn't throw out the wisdom with the reckless abandon of youth and the effects are hallucinogenic.

Jonathan Romney Financial Times It takes all of Plaza’s weird chanting inflections and Stella’s exuberantly twitchy enthusiasm to make it pay off — but it does, with sly charm. Rated: 4/5 Oct 3, 2024 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It's a simple idea... the thing is, that it's done with real tenderness and insight. Oct 3, 2024 Full Review Wendy Ide Observer (UK) It’s a fun, silly premise, but while there’s no shortage of stoner humour, the film is deeper and considerably more satisfying than the drug-baked adolescent wisecracking might initially suggest. Rated: 4/5 Sep 30, 2024 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...a deliberately-paced yet consistently engrossing endeavor... Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 24, 2024 Full Review Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat Spirituality & Practice An unusual coming-of-age comedy about learning from the choices you can make from your older self. Rated: 3/5 Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Natasha Alvar The Fiction Department The film is meant to be a comedy – I think the title definitely suggests that – but the cast brings so much poignancy to the set pieces in the film. There are parts to this that are just completely devastating, and so well-acted by both Stella and Plaza. Rated: 4/5 Nov 26, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

valleyman Very smart story telling - and an amusing story. Totally enjoy Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/18/24 Full Review Brock They’re both great in this film. The dude should have been given a different name other the Josh though. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Brian P “The only thing you can’t get back is time. It goes by so fast.” - Megan Park As someone who values time, this movie definitely didn’t waste mine. "My Old A**" is an outstanding coming-of-age film that deserves your time and attention. While it may not be the most original entry in this genre, its remarkable writing and stellar performances from a mostly unknown cast—aside from Aubrey Plaza—she absolutely owned her role. Plaza appears only briefly, but she kills it when she does appear. As a writer, I always appreciate films with great dialogue, and this is one of the best-written films of 2024. Megan Park both wrote and directed the movie, and I foresee a bright future for this talented filmmaker. The characters feel like real kids, and the script provides the actors with the opportunity to shine through the stellar dialogue. Coming-of-age films will always resonate with me. Even as I grow older, they help me reflect on my youth and life in new ways. This film provoked thoughts I hadn’t yet had the chance to process. Despite selling itself as a comedy, it has surprising depth. That said, it’s not as in-depth like Ex Machina or Inception, so don’t worry. But you’ll definitely be reflecting on it after watching. In conclusion, I highly recommend this film, and I urge you to support indie movies. Even if it’s no longer in theaters, be sure to check it out when it hits Amazon Prime. My final rating: 9/10, and I would definitely watch it again. As always, let me know your thoughts on the film! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/25/24 Full Review Butch I thought it was a new twist on a familiar story that leaves you appreciating life. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/24/24 Full Review Thomas This movie was ok. Overall I didn’t like how Elliot fell in love with Chad. Tbh it was kinda cringe. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/22/24 Full Review PI It is a beautiful small movie. I liked it a lot. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 10/21/24 Full Review Read all reviews
