Bob Thomas Associated Press Gooding is the ideal actor to portray Brashear. Not only does Gooding perform the physical demands of the role, he also meets all the emotional challenges. Sean S The two leads do an incredible job to make this morning entertaining, but the story is somewhat flat and given the true history behind this movie makes me wish they stayed truer to it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/07/24 Full Review andrea r Highly recommended! Heart felt movie with a lot of motivational quotes! This real life story is one to be seen! 10/10. Great acting too Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/17/23 Full Review Steve D Formulaic and perhaps playing too much with reality but it works. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review JUSTICE A great movie, gives a great insight to struggles, hard work and dedication, which develops a great story Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/22 Full Review Audience Member De Niro and Cuba Gooding Jr worked awesome together in this really nice and interesting drama that ran in a brilliant pace. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review ronald h Come on, folks. Its impossible not to like this movie. Yes, it's riddled with clichés: the underdog guy fighting against all odds to reach his goal (in this case, a black man fighting racism in the U.S. Navy of the early 1950's); the racist sergeant who treats the new recruit like dirt but ends up respecting him; the long-suffering wife who stands by her man through all his travails; the glorious climax, with swelling orchestral music as he makes it to the finish line. So what? It's a tried and true formula (and a true story), and what's wrong with heroes? We need them. Robert DeNiro knocks himself out as the nasty sergeant. He really seems immersed in his character. Cuba Gooding is impressive as Carl Brashear. The supporting actors are strong, too. It feels like all of the cast knew they were making still another "hero" movie, so they wanted it to be a good one. "Inspirational" films tend to invoke cynical reviews, simply because they've been done so many times before. Well, I'm an inveterate cynic myself, but I'm not embarrassed to say that this film inspired me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Read all reviews
