Kevin Thomas Los Angeles Times A splendid example of what imagination can do with formula genre material. May 29, 2020 Full Review Jim Naureckas Chicago Tribune What makes this film enjoyable is its clever, often subversive script and its surprisingly good actors for a low-budget Canadian movie. May 29, 2020 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times Bruce Pittman, the director, and Ron Oliver, who wrote the screenplay, have constructed the movie as if it were a gourmet banquet for toddlers. From the first course to the last, it's all ice cream. May 20, 2003 Full Review Juan Carlos Coto South Florida Sun-Sentinel For all the filmmakers' deftness with story and visual style, it's a shame they didn't apply their talents to something more original. Rated: 2/4 Aug 19, 2021 Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast A witty horror comedy with its tongue planted firmly in cheek. Lisa Schrage cements Mary Lou Maloney as an iconic horror villain. Rated: 4.5/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Felix Vasquez Jr. Cinema Crazed There's just so much to enjoy with "Hello Mary Lou" as despite its derivative premise, it takes the whole idea to new levels while embracing the inherent camp of the whole concept. Lucas t The underrated first film was followed by this joyride 7 years later, one of the very few examples of a better sequel. Though I still am very fond of the original. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/28/24 Full Review BigD J This film (Prom Night II) was surprisingly good, especially when compared to the first, which admittedly isn't saying much. It starts as a slow burn of your typical 80's schlocky campy teenie bopper film and gradually progresses into a much darker, epic display of brutality. Worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/27/24 Full Review Jens B I fell asleep during the first one, so I didn't have any expectations going in. Just wanted to see Michael Ironside again. And boy, oh boy, PROM NIGHT II did not disappoint. First of all, it's a possession flick set in High School, you get Ironside as the principal with a dark past, a very horny ghost, everything explodes (including gravestones), and a bonkers finale! I had a lot of fun with this one! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Unclericos T Better than the first. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/08/23 Full Review B Rad I know this movie as Prom Night 2, Hello Mary Lou. By any name it's a shitty movie. Being a fan of 80's horror I never watched this based on reviews. But I figured what the hell, I'll watch it.....Oooof, big mistake, It was as bad as expected. Terrible acting, unlikable characters, and a stupid plot. Run far away from this one Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member You already know a film would be awful when it ripped off elements from other iconic horror films. That's what Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night II did. The film had a teenage girl get revenge on her enemies on prom night (rip-off of Carrie), become possessed (rip-off of The Exorcist), haunt teenagers (rip-off of A Nightmare on Elm Street), and have a creature pop out of a body (rip-off of Alien). The film is basically about a prom queen ghost getting revenge on everyone who went to high school with her. Despite some decency in the acting from Michael Ironside, Wendy Lyon, and Lisa Schrage, the film was already awful from the start. All because of the idiotic writing by Ron Oliver, odd and sad direction by Bruce Pittman, and shoddy editing by Nick Rotundo. Goodbye Mary Lou because this movie is awful. Zero out of five stars.
