This bright yellow great looking 90-degree L Twin Desmodromic valve actuated engine sport bike was first produced in 2003 and its production continued for 3 years. During these three years, four models of the 749 were presented for sale: 749, 749 Dark, 749S, and 749R. The 749 R, as the R denotes was produced for racing and the production number of the bike was stamped on the triple clamp.

Another difference that the racing version had was that it was much lighter from the typical version. The weight of the bike was 188 kg (414 lb) (dry) and it offered great speed on the racing tracks and was featured in a lot of races at that time. It got really famous among the race lovers and riders at that time and Ducati had to increase the production to meet the demands of the people. The 749 was replaced by the Ducati 848 for the 2008 model year.
