I am incredibly honoured that the people of South West Devon have chosen to put their trust me, writes the new South West Devon MP Rebecca Smith.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to all the local people across Plympton, Plymstock, Ivybridge, and the villages of West Devon, and the South Hams. I am committed to representing everyone, regardless of whether you voted for me or not and will be a tireless champion for our area.

Sir Gary Streeter has set a high standard with his outstanding service over the past three decades. Additionally, the residents of Buckland Monachorum and Burrator wards have been well represented by Sir Geoffrey Cox.

As I take on this role, I am committed to upholding the values of honesty, integrity, and decency that they have exemplified. Nine years ago, I returned to Devon, drawn by my love for politics and this unique part of the country.

I believed then, as I do now, that there is no better place to serve and make a real difference. My journey has been guided by a deep connection to this community, our area, and a desire to see it prosper.

I am thrilled to begin this journey as your new Member of Parliament. In the coming years, I am eager to meet more of you, understand your concerns, and work tirelessly on your behalf. I aim to be a diligent constituency MP continuing my track record of getting things done, addressing issues that impact your family and your life, while also advocating for South West Devon in Westminster.

There are three key issues that I am particularly passionate about: Housing, Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), and opportunities for young people, especially those in care. My previous role in the Plymouth City Council Cabinet has given me firsthand experience in tackling housing challenges.

As one of three MPs representing the Plymouth are, I am committed to standing up for our wonderful city. I will hold Plymouth’s Labour Council to account, and ensure they are delivering value for money to local people, and I will not let the two Labour MPs and the Labour Government forget to give us our fair share. I will campaign to see more bus services between Plympton and Plymstock, improve access to GPs and Dentists, protect the jobs created by the Plymouth FreePort in Langage and Sherford, and protect our wonderful green spaces from overdevelopment.

It is crucial to protect our green spaces while ensuring the development of truly affordable homes for working families and individuals. Initiatives like the Hillcrest project, which converted 86 former MOD homes into affordable housing, demonstrate practical solutions that I championed. This is not just about increasing social housing but about creating homes that meet the real needs of our community.

Following on from my previous work chairing the Plymouth Violence Against Women and Girls commission, I am keen to continue highlighting this important issue. Over 14 years of Conservative Government we made a great deal of progress, but there is more to do. I will seek cross-party collaboration to achieve the best outcomes. It is essential to develop robust policies and support systems to protect and empower women and girls, ensuring their safety and well-being.

Equally, Looked After Children deserve our utmost attention and care. I am committed to advocating for policies that provide better support and opportunities for care experienced children, ensuring they have a promising and secure future. The road ahead is full of challenges, but also incredible opportunities.

My vision for South West Devon is one where every resident feels heard, supported, and valued. I am committed to working positively and constructively across the constituency, building on the foundations laid by my predecessors, and driving progress that benefits all.

Together, I believe can achieve great things for South West Devon. I am excited to move forward with optimism, determination, and a shared commitment to making our community an even better place to call home.

As I take on the responsibility of representing South West Devon in Parliament, my promise to you is one of dedication and service. I am here to listen, to act, and to make a difference.
