50s & 60s Movies Worth Watching

I'm in a phase of watching classic Noir, '60s sci-fi, silent films, and black & white thrillers. Here's what I've found so far.

Planet of the Vampires (1965) - Plot - IMDb
A strange little movie about space vampires. It drags a little, but it's worth watching. The designs of the costumes and backgrounds have been said to have informed science fiction movies we watch today, such as Blade Runner and the Alien franchise. And...there is a surprise at the end - it is kind of amusing.
If Them is a great example of 60s monster sci-fi, The Monolith Monsters is the worst. It's so bad, you really have to see it for yourself. It's about some mutant crystalline something that grows faster than kudzu and takes over a city. How corny is that?! Run or that rock candy will impale you! Gotta laugh!
This might appear on the surface to be one of those campy over-sized critter sci-fi movies, but it's not. This is the first to introduce the "what if humans did something and it made something small incredibly huge". In this case it was ants. There is some fine, albeit for it's time, scientific query and story-telling here. The plot is fairly tight. Monster movies that follow missed the mark because they simply put in a giant bunny or something and forgot to write a script. Watch this.
This may sound harsh, but I just don't think Keanu Reeves can act his way out of a paper bag. That said, even if they had a decent actor, The Day the Earth Stood Still did not need to be remade. The message this original has is still relevant and pertinent today.
Since I mentioned Hitchcock, here's another fantastic, yet little known thriller by him. Rebecca. If I say any more it will ruin it for you so grab your 10 oz bottle of Coca Cola with a red and white paper straw in it and a bag of popcorn, sit back and relax and just wait for it!
One of the truly finest thrillers I've ever seen. If it's airing, I'm watchin! After all, it's Hitchcock!
Sunset Boulevard (film) - Wikipedia
I would be totally remiss if I didn't include Sunset Boulevard! If you haven't seen this...drop everything and rent it or stream it!!! I'm not going to say a word. Gloria Swanson was in her 40s when she made this film and is simply luminous. Please read the wiki link on in. The story of how the film came to be is as interesting as the movie itself.
Oh, Veronica Lake, you're a bad, bad girl! This movie is actually the basis for the TV series Bewitched, and not the movie Bell, Book, and Candle that many think. In this movie, Veronica Lake is a witch who unexpectedly falls in love with a human and marries him. And then stuff happens. It's a cute comedy, however, it may seem to drag because our modern tastes for movies has changed to a faster pace than this one. Great for a relaxing evening.
Classic sci-fi with robots, a girl that's never been around young men before, a machine from an ancient but extinct society that was much more advanced than humans. That's a formula for some entertainment, by gosh! Lots of fun to watch.
Barbara Stanwyck, there's no other like her. She's a spitfire in satin. No matter what role she plays, you can tell she'll never be anyone's victim. Her eyes sparkle with life and she's always got something hiding in her garter. This is a fantastic classic and another Essential.
Another Essential. Orson Welles is a genius director. This film has one of the longest single take shots in the history of film. It was so complex, pieces of scenery had to be lifted and lowered within a specific sequence and on a strict timing cue, it was like the scenery was choreographed like a dance. For it's time, it was scandalous, and for now, it's still fabulous.
An Ed Wood production, it's as off-the-wall and bad as you would expect, but in a Rocky Horror Picture Show sort of way. Over-the-top campy and just a lot of fun.
What a surprisingly great noir thriller! Found this on NetFlix streaming through our Roku device and Fred and I watched it. It still has the power to keep you riveted to your seat.
It's impossible to mention Fritz Lang without mentioning his crowning achievement - Metropolis. I could watch this on a loop forever!
