Problem: There is a white spot on the lateral side of my dog's right eye (at the margin of the center dark circle). Other details include...

- Some irregular dark margin above the white spot.
- Noticed the white spot and the irregular dark margin during regular check up.
- Cotton has no irritated eye, no red eye, no teary eyes
- No apparent discomfort, she does rub her face to pillows and blankets at times but she had been doing it for years and only does so when she's active or playing
- Vision seems ok as she can see dogs on the other side of the park and bark to them

Breed: Purebred Bichon Frise
Age: 12 years old

Jan 08, 2013My Online Vet Response for: White Spot on Dog's Eye
by: Dr. Carol Jean Tillman

Hi Gary,
You submitted some good photos, but I am not sure that the 'white' spot shows up well enough for me to give you a diagnosis. What I can see is some pigment changes in the sclera (white part) of her eye, adjacent to her iris.

These changes I would relate to normal aging process. Since she is not showing pain, discharge, irritation/redness, I do not think there is a 'disease' process occurring. But, just to be on the safe side, it might be best to take Cotton to a Veterinary Ophthalmologist for a closer look.

You are more than welcome to submit more photos, especially if you have a 'close-up' lens, that might help to magnify the area.

Take care,
