GEOSS (Global Earth Observation System of Systems) is a central part of the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Information System’s mission.
The NextGEOSS project, a European contribution to GEOSS, proposes to develop the next generation centralised hub for Earth Observation data, where the users can connect to access data and deploy Earth Observation based applications. The concept revolves around providing the data and resources to the users communities, together with Cloud resources, seamlessly connected to provide an integrated ecosystem for supporting applications. A central component of NextGEOSS is the strong emphasis put on engaging the communities of providers and users, and bridging the space in between.
The project has a special focus on encouraging and stimulating data exploitation by businesses.
Capacity building is at the heart of NextGEOSS and the project will identify training needs to encourage wider user-engagement with Earth Observation data and its commercial potential in the next 3,5 years.
Role of OGC in NextGEOSS project
OGC-Europe leads the Work Package 4 in charge of Engagement. Its main role, besides task coordination, is to engage with the GEO Data Providers, GEO activities and Foundational Tasks and to bring the results back into the standards process for the 550 OGC members worldwide. This guarantees that the standards related activities in the Work Package 4, get worldwide exposure and promote the re-use in related standards and technology. Furthermore, OGC-Europe will lead :
- task 3.5 “Citizen Observatories” in which we will develop a Citizen Science Definition Service (CS-DS) that will be assessed byt the CItizen Science Commu,iy in the Citizen Science Interoperability Experiment,
- task 7.3. “Smart Cities”,
- and will participate in task 8.1. “Communication and Dissemination”.
The project started in December 2016 and ended November 2020.
