Portrait of Mike McIntire

Mike McIntire

I look for stories that reveal things people need to know about their health and safety, public institutions and elected leaders. My subjects have ranged widely, including white-collar crime, Wall Street bailouts, terrorism, gun violence, highway safety and corruption in college sports. Holding power to account through the disclosure of important information, often hidden or overlooked, is a guiding principle.

After graduating college in 1985 with a political science degree, I replied to a help-wanted ad for a reporter’s position at my hometown weekly newspaper. I went on to other jobs at about a half-dozen news organizations, covering police and crime, state government and New York city hall. I’ve also served as a bureau chief and editor at several Connecticut newspapers, and published a book, “Champions Way: Football, Florida and the Lost Soul of College Sports.”

I have been part of three reporting teams that won Pulitzer Prizes and was a finalist two other times. During the 2020 presidential campaign, I was part of a team that obtained and published Donald Trump’s long-concealed tax returns, a journalistic exclusive that earned George Polk, Daniel Pearl and Scripps-Howard awards.

Like all Times journalists, I am committed to upholding the standards of integrity outlined in our Ethical Journalism Handbook. I take seriously my obligations to protect sources who share sensitive information with me, to avoid conflicts of interest and to be fair and thorough in my reporting. I do not accept gifts, money or favors of any kind, and I have made a personal choice never to belong to any political party.
