Ravens backup quarterback Tyler Huntley has been named to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement for Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the Ravens announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Huntley started five games for Baltimore during the 2022 season (four regular season games, one playoff game) filling in for an injured Lamar Jackson. Huntley went 2-3 as the starter.
  • Huntley, who turns 25 on Feb. 3, threw for 658 yards with two touchdowns, three interceptions and a 77.2 passer rating. He added 137 rushing yards and one TD.
  • In other Pro Bowl quarterback news, the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence will replace the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes since Mahomes will be playing in Super Bowl LVII.

Backstory

This was the second straight season where Huntley needed to fill in for an injured Jackson. Last season, Huntley played in seven games with four starts. He threw for 1,081 yards with three TD passes, four interceptions and a 76.6 passer rating. Huntley also rushed for 294 yards and two TDs.

Pro Bowl skill competition to include flag football, dodgeball

Is Huntley really worthy of the Pro Bowl?

The obvious answer is no. But for the sake of statistics, I’ll give you a better view of how laughable his inclusion is to the roster.

Huntley ranked 40th in Expected Points Added per dropback, via TruMedia, among 48 quarterbacks with at least 100 dropbacks. The only ones worse were Zach Wilson, Deshaun Watson, Baker Mayfield, Joe Flacco, P.J. Walker, Colt McCoy, Skylar Thompson and Sam Ehlinger. Huntley also ranked 41st in passer rating with a 77.2 rate.

Who else is really left to choose from? Russell Wilson? Ryan Tannehill? Derek Carr? Matt Ryan? Davis Mills? Mac Jones? Mike White? Kenny Pickett? In reality, someone like Jacoby Brissett would make way more sense. Brissett ranked 12th in EPA per dropback and 23rd in passer rating adding 12 TDs passes and six interceptions in keeping the seat warm for Watson.

There’s absolutely no reason Huntley should be named to the Pro Bowl as any kind of replacement. But it’s literally a flag football game and skills competition at this rate. So does any “replacement” even really matter at this point? — Holder
