Big Lots is preparing to close dozens of stores across the country, including its New York locations in Carle Place and Centereach on Long Island, and Queensbury in Warren County.
The retailer also plans to shutter its Connecticut operations in Manchester, Milford and Waterford, while its 27 stores in New Jersey appear to be safe for now.
Earlier this month, Big Lots announced plans to turn off the lights on as many as 40 stores by the end of the year after posting a net loss of $205 million in the quarter ending May 4, 2024.
CEO Bruce Thorn blamed the company’s troubles largely on a dip in consumer spending, “particularly in high ticket discretionary items.”
The retailer at the time operated more than 1,300 shops in 48 states. That included 64 outlets in New York and 27 in New Jersey.
According to Nexstar Media, nearly 90 stores in 27 states posted closure notices on their websites this week. Many of the stores heading for extinction are advertising “sales up to 20%” on their websites.
Big Lots did not respond to a request for a list of all the operations it plans to shutdown. When exactly the closures will take place is also unclear.
