Klay Thompson's Dad Unhappy With His Son's Decision to Join Mavericks

On Monday, longtime Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson decided to leave the only organization he's ever known.

Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks, ending his 13-year run in Golden State, the organization that selected him with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Thompson was being heavily pursued by the Los Angeles Lakers and was reportedly offered more money to sign there. However, in the end, he chose Dallas — much to the chagrin of his own father.

Klay's father, Mychal Thompson, was not shy in expressing his desires for his son this free agency cycle. Mychal, a former Lakers big man and current Lakers broadcaster, was active on social media before his son made a decision expressing his hopes that Klay would choose the Lakers.

On Tuesday, a day after Klay's decision was made, Mychal went on SiriusXM NBA Radio, and, in his words, was not in a congratulatory mood.

"I'm not feeling too much in a congratulatory mood right now," the elder Thompson said. "Obviously, it's Klay's decision, it's his life, he's a grown man at 34 years of age... but I'm really disappointed. I was hoping, hoping, as you can assess, that he would be a Laker. It was close, it came down to the Lakers and the Mavs, but the Mavs won out. But you know me, I was hoping and praying he would finish his career with the Lakers."

Mychal was very candid in the interview and even said he tried to sell Klay, who grew up a Laker fan, on joining the Lakers.

"I tried to sell playing for the Lakers. That's the right thing for me to do and the proper thing for me to do and I felt like it was the correct thing for me to do because I really believe in this franchise, the franchise has been so good to me and my family, including Klay," Mychal said. "He grew up a Laker fan, he grew up idolizing Kobe Bryant like most kids his age so I just thought it seemed to be the perfect fit for him to finally come back home. We always talked about him playing for the Lakers if he was not a Golden State Warrior. Of course, being a fan of Kobe, he would have loved to have played for the Lakers. But he had a chance, and when the chance came he chose the Mavericks instead.

"I'll live with it, I accept it and I'm happy for him that he's happy with his decision, but of course, I tried to sell him on the Lakers."

Mychal clearly did what he could to try to convince his son to come to Los Angeles, but as he said in the end, it was Klay's decision. And for whatever reasons, Klay decided that Dallas was the best place for him to spend the next three years of his career.
