Donald Trump Revels in Praise by Former Political Rivals As RNC Day 2 Wraps

The second day of the Republican National Convention kicked off on Tuesday after a wild first night that included an emotional Donald Trump making his first public appearance since the Pennsylvania rally shooting. Here are a few of the highlights.

  • Night 2 Speakers: Former political opponents took to the stage to sing the praises of Donald Trump, including South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis spent most of his speech criticizing Democrats' policies on immigration, education and gender identity. Haley was met with cheers and boos, and threw a 'strong endorsement' behind Trump. Closing out the night were Marco Rubio and RNC co-chair Lara Trump.
  • Everyday Americans Share Stories: Five regular people took to the stage and shared emotional stories about why America needs to elect Trump. Staying with the theme of Making American Safe, the stories often brought RNC attendees to tears.
  • JD Vance Mania: The face of Trump's VP pick is all over the convention hall, from Trump-Vance T-shirts to Trump-Vance campaign signs. As is tradition for vice presidential picks, he is expected to take the stage on Wednesday night. He joined Trump for the second night of the convention.
  • Fatal Shooting Near RNC: The second day of the convention kicked off with a fatal shooting near the perimeter of the RNC.

RNC Day 2 is a wrap

The second day of the Republican National Convention was just as jam packed as the first day - starting out with a fatal shooting near the convention perimeter.

Amid the outside chaos, the night was filled with speeches from former political rivals of Donald Trump who took to the stage to sing his praises from Nikki Haley to Ron DeSantis.

Five everyday Americans whose lives have been impacted by crime shared their emotional stories with the thousands of RNC attendees.

Lara Trump ended the night talking about the impact her father-in-law has had her, their family and the country.

Tomorrow is expected to be another jam packed day at the convention. JD Vance will take the stage to deliver his highly anticipated convention speech.

Check back tomorrow for Newsweek's live blog updates. We are calling it a night for now.

Lara Trump References Harriet Tubman, Other Historical Figures

"We are the country whose founders gave their fortunes, freedom, and lives to pursue the dream of a free society. We are the country of Thomas Edison, Susan B. Anthony, Henry Ford, and Harriet Tubman," Lara Trump said Tuesday.

"We are the country who fought and won two world wars, and we are the country who always rises to meet the moment, no matter how insurmountable attacks."

"In that split second on Saturday, Donald Trump reminded us all of that very history and who we are at our core as a nation — that is the Donald Trump that I know," Lara said.

Lara Trump Wishes Public Could See Donald Through Her Lense

"I know what you hear out there about Donald Trump. I know what you read and what the media tells you, and what out-of-touch celebrities on the left say about this man," his daughter-in-law Lara Trump said Tuesday.

"But when I look at Donald Trump, I see a wonderful father, father-in-law, and, of course, grandfather to my two young children, Luke and Carolina."

"I know that I'm lucky enough to get to call him my father-in-law, and see him a little differently than all of you, but through that lens that I sometimes wish more people could see, this is a man who has sacrificed for his family and man who has truly sacrificed for his country."

Lara Trump Addresses Donald Assassination Attempt

"Our family has faced our fair share of death threats, mysterious powders sent to our homes, and tasteless and violent comments directed towards us on social media, but none of that prepares you as a daughter-in-law, to watch in real-time. Someone tried to kill a person you love," Eric Trump's wife, Lara, said Tuesday about Trump's assassination attempt on Saturday.

"None of that prepares you as a mother to quickly reach for the remote and turn your young children away from the screen so that they're not witness to something that scars the memory of their grandpa for the rest of their lives."

MSNBC makes a choice

Donald Trump's two chief rivals for the Republican presidential nominations endorsed him in speeches at the RNC. MSNBC determined that its viewers didn't really want to hear Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis.

The network, which appeals to liberal viewers, showed a portion of Haley's speech as part of its convention coverage, then cut away to a Rachel Maddow commentary. She discussed Haley's past criticisms of Trump and compared her to a paddle ball that "keeps coming back for another whack."

Maddow brought journalist Tim Alberta in for an interview, where they discussed how Haley had criticized Trump during the campaign. Alberta said some of Haley's former supporters were disappointed in how she had set aside principles in order to back Trump.

MSNBC cameras showed DeSantis speaking to the convention, but the network did not play audio of the speech.

In general, the network has been commenting upon, rather than showing, what is going on at the convention. CNN and Fox News Channel have been showing more of the actual speeches.

Marco Rubio Remembers Trump Assassination Attempt Victim

"He wasn't rich, he wasn't famous, but the only reason why we know his name and story now is because last Saturday, he shielded his wife and daughter from an assassin's bullet —lost his life the way he lived it: a hero," Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Tuesday about Corey Comperatore, the man who was shot and killed at a Trump rally on Saturday.

JD Vance Attracts Double the Viewers as Joe Biden

Senator JD Vance's interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity attracted twice as many viewers as President Joe Biden's interview with NBC News' Lester Holt Monday night, according to rating data provided to Newsweek.

Biden and Vance both sat down for interviews Monday night at 9 p.m., setting up a direct competition between the two as Vance addressed voters in his first major media appearance after former President Donald Trump named him as his running mate.

Meanwhile, Biden sought to lower political temperatures following a shooting at a Trump rally over the weekend, being investigated as an assassination attempt, and quell concerns about his age from some Democratic voters.

Data provided to Newsweek by Fox News shows that Vance received double the viewers than Biden.

Donald Trump Considering 'Highly Overrated' CEO for His Cabinet

Former President Donald Trump, who is seeking another shot at the Oval Office, suggested that he is thinking of appointing JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, whom he criticized in the past, to the role of Treasury secretary.

Trump was critical of Dimon after he perceived that he was supporting Nikki Haley in the Republican presidential primaries. Dimon said that the former South Carolina governor and U.N. ambassador could be an alternative to Trump.

"Highly overrated Globalist Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMORGAN, is quietly pushing another non-MAGA person, Nikki Haley, for President," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "I've never been a big Jamie Dimon fan."

While former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was booed by some Republicans as she took the stage at the Republican National Convention, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was widely cheered.

Both Haley and DeSantis were on the receiving end of former President Donald Trump's ire during the presidential campaign. The Republican primary sparked divides in the Republican party and some Trump supporters haven't fully accepted Haley or DeSantis back into the fold, just as some Haley and DeSantis supporters haven't switched their loyalty to Trump.

But, on Tuesday, both DeSantis and Haley united behind Trump and encouraged every voter to do so, as well.

Nikki Haley RNC Speech Recap

Newsweek's Alex Rouhandeh reports that Nikki Haley, the last Republican candidate to remain in the primary against former President Donald Trump, entered the convention center to loud cheers as well as scattered boos.

The former UN ambassador was on the receiving end of Trump's ire during the Republican primary and took shots from him for staying in the race too long. She wasn't originally slated to attend, but Trump said in an interview before the convention that he would consider extending an invitation to her. While on stage, Haley acknowledged the invitation she received and said she was honored to accept it.

However, Haley's speech seemed to win Republicans over. While the room went relatively quiet when she said people don't agree with everything Trump says and does, her remark encouraging those people to vote for Trump was met with cheers.

"You don't have to agree with Trump 100% of the time to vote for him," Haley said. "Take it from me, I haven't always agreed with President Trump, but we agree more often than we disagree."

Madeline Brame, whose veteran son was stabbed to death in Harlem in 2018, brought the crowd's focus Tuesday night to one of right's biggest boogeymen: New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

Brame has publicly criticized Bragg for being soft on crime, including in the case of her son's alleged killer. The crowd responded with roaring applause as Bragg is one of the officials involved in Trump's various legal battles. "They betrayed us and stab us in the back," Brame said about Democrats. "Trump was right when he said they're after us, he's just standing in the way."

US Representative claims he was 'assaulted' at Milwaukee hotel

Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin said Tuesday that he was the victim of "political violence" after an altercation with an activist.

Van Orden posted on X that he was 'assaulted' while standing in line at a Milwaukee hotel by what appeared to be a member of what he called "the pro-Hamas group CODEPINK."

CODEPINK describes itself as a feminist organization working to end U.S. warfare and imperialism. It posted a video claiming that Van Orden shoved one of its members as the group was trying to get into a Republican luncheon.

The Milwaukee Police Department said in a statement that a 24-year-old woman was arrested in the same block as the hotel for battering a victim around 11:07 a.m. Tuesday. The statement said the victim sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention at the scene. The statement did not identify the woman or the victim.

"This appears to be an incident of political violence and I will never tolerate this," Van Orden said in his post. "Regardless of the severity of the violence, political violence is political violence." He called for people "who choose the path of political violence" to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"Nothing will change until these people are held accountable," he said.

Van Orden, a first-term representative, has a history of public conflicts. He cursed at high school-aged Senate pages during a late-night tour of the U.S. Capitol in 2023 and threatened a staffer at a Wisconsin library in 2021 over a gay pride display.

Speaker Johnson paints bleak picture of life under a Democrat government

House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for toning down political rhetoric after the attempted assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

In his RNC speech, Johnson perhaps veered from that standard a bit, framing the November elections as a stark, almost existential choice for voters.

After promising a "thorough" House investigation of the attempt on Trump's life, Johnson said the nation has "come to a moment in America where the basic things that we once took for granted are being openly challenged like never before."

He said the battle is not "just between two opposing political parties" but instead, "We're now in the midst of a struggle between two completely different visions of who we are as Americans, and what our country will be."

Some Republicans have since Saturday blamed President Joe and Democrats for characterizing Trump as a "threat to democracy" with authoritarian leanings.

Johnson suggested in his convention speech that Democratic victories in November were the real threat: "We have no guarantee that this grand experiment in self-governance can endure unless we respond to the call."

"This party out here is really united behind President Trump," Vance said in an interview with NewsMax from inside the arena. "It's a really good feeling. And I think that that momentum is something you can almost reach out to touch, it's so powerful."

Vance said his phone blew up with calls as soon as Trump offered him the job, and he missed a call from an unidentified number that turned out to be Harris. He said he spoke to Harris Tuesday and "she was very gracious, very cordial." He said he did not save the voicemail message from Harris.

Vance's comment, made at a National Conservatism conference in Washington, D.C. last week, shot to prominence after Donald Trump announced the Ohio Senator as his vice-presidential running mate on Monday.

Vance said: "I was talking with a friend recently...one of the big dangers in the world is nuclear proliferation and of course the Biden administration doesn't care about it and I was talking about what is the first truly Islamist country that will get a nuclear weapon and we were like 'maybe it's Iran, maybe Pakistan already kind of counts' then we sort of finally decided maybe it's actually the U.K. since Labour just took over."

Critics and commentators on both the political left and right hailed the memoir as helping to explain the anger and frustrations in rural America that fuelled the surge in support for Trump. Others, however, argued the book was full of manipulative stories and "ugly stereotypes".

"I don't welcome everybody in this meeting, in this room, the guys up in the fake news. Frankly, you guys up there in the fake news have worn out your welcome."

Lake was a TV news anchor for 20 years.

Trump's many rivals fall in line

It's former Trump rivals night in Milwaukee as Republicans convene for the second prime-time session of the nominating convention.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Amb. Nikki Haley and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are expected to take the stage. It will be perhaps the clearest indication yet of how much Trump has consolidated the party and remade the GOP brand in his image.

DeSantis was once expected to be a fierce 2024 rival. He dropped out after the initial votes were cast in Iowa.

Haley held on for months, but never threatened Trump and waited until a few weeks ago to explicitly say she would vote for him. She was a late addition to the convention lineup, announced only after the Saturday assassination attempt against Trump.

Cruz was the second-place finisher in the 2016 primaries, and at the convention that summer he delivered a tense, almost bitter speech that drew boos from Trump delegates.

No such divisions are expected tonight.

Why 'Jeopardy!' Fans Are Furious Over Donald Trump's RNC Appearance

Monday night's episode of Jeopardy! came to an abrupt end thanks to a special broadcast of Donald Trump's appearance at the Republican National Convention.

The interruption came just before the Final Jeopardy, meaning viewers were not able to see contestants Brenna Sniatecki, James Hayakawa, and Isaac Hirsch go head-to-head.

Viewers were not happy with the quick change, taking to social media to lambast ABC for the move. "ABC pre-empting Jeopardy for the Republican National Convention is loser behavior," one person posted on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Company Debuts 'Fight' Sneakers With Trump's Image On Them

A company is now selling sneakers showing an image of Donald Trump with streaks of blood on his cheek and pumping his fist in the air after he was the target of an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.

The white high tops are being sold as "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT High-Tops" for $299 on a website run by CIC Ventures LLC, a company that Trump reported owning in his 2023 financial disclosure.

The company says the new shoes are limited edition with only 5,000 pairs available and are estimated to ship in September or October. It also said 10 pairs will be randomly autographed.

"These limited edition high-tops, featuring Trump's iconic image with his fist raised, honor his unwavering determination and bravery," it says. "With only 5,000 pairs available, each one is a true collector's item. Show your support and patriotic pride with these exclusive sneakers, capturing a defining moment in history."

CIC Ventures is the same company that debuted "Never Surrender High-Tops," shiny gold sneakers with an American flag detail on the back, for $399.

The sale is another sign the former president's allies intend to capitalize on how Trump reacted after the shooting at a Saturday rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump got back to his feet and pumped his fist toward the crowd, mouthing "Fight, fight."
