Las Vegas Raiders

Tom Brady might be having buyer’s remorse about agreeing to purchase a piece of the Raiders. If not, Fox might be having buyer’s remorse about agreeing to pay Brady $37.5 million per year to call games.

According to Seth Wickersham of ESPN.com, if/when Brady’s purchase of a portion of the Raiders is approved, severe restrictions on his access to all NFL teams will be activated. Per Wickersham, “Brady would not be permitted to be in another team’s facility, would not be permitted to witness practice and would not be permitted to attend broadcast production meetings, either in-person or virtually.”

Those things are the lifeblood of broadcast crews. It gives them inside information regarding the game that will unfold, making it easier to tell fans what happened. Brady would be prohibited from ever doing that, except on the rare occasions that he works a Raiders game.

Brady also would be “prohibited from publicly criticizing game officials and other clubs,” which could open the door to a fine if he goes to far in calling a bad call a bad call.

The restrictions were presented to owners during Tuesday’s meeting in Minnesota. It’s unclear whether the restrictions have changed since May, when the Commissioner suggested that the situation has been addressed — but the league declined to say what the restrictions were.

As PFT reported in July, Brady and former Patriots teammate Richard Seymour have joined forces in an effort to buy 10.4 percent of the team. It’s unclear if/when the transaction will be approved by owners.

At this point, Brady and Fox should want it to be delayed until after the 2024 season. Why have Brady’s first year complicated by a potential approval of the transaction in October, or December?

More broadly, Brady should pick a lane here. Be an owner or be a broadcaster. Don’t be both. Because you can’t be an owner and do the job properly as a broadcaster.

To try to both, frankly, is more than a little selfish.

And, even more frankly, these restrictions might be the NFL’s way to send that much-needed message to Brady.

The Raiders have added a pair of players who were recently cut by other teams.

Per the transaction wire, Las Vegas has claimed defensive back Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu.

Harper was waived by the Chargers and Laulu by the Colts.

A Las Vegas native, Laulu was a Colts seventh-round pick this spring.

The Raiders will need to make a pair of corresponding moves to finalize the additions to the roster.

The NFL’s new access policy for certain locations in its stadiums continues to generate a strenuous objection from the Las Vegas police union.

Via Noble Brigham of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, union president Steve Grammas said that the Las Vegas Police Protective Association continues to recommend that its members not comply with procedures that require facial recognition for clearance to enter certain areas of the venue.

Grammas said that the union, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, and NFL personnel held on Friday a Zoom meeting regarding the issue. No progress was made; Grammas said the officers will not comply with the new procedures.

The Raiders and the NFL have some time to sort it out, but not much. The team’s first two games will be played on the road. The Raiders open their home schedule on September 22, against the Panthers.

The league will have a problem if the police refuse to work the game. At some point, the NFL and/or the Raiders will need to hire their own private force to secure the premises before, during, and after the game.

Add the Raiders to the list of teams that have announced their initial 53-player roster.

The list of cuts includes veteran wide receivers Alex Bachman, Jalen Guyton, and Kristian Wilkerson. They released all three players and kept younger players Ramel Keyton and Tyreik McAllister, although further changes could come with the waiver process still to play out.

Safety Trey Taylor was placed on injured reserve and he’s been designated to return to action during the regular season.

They also waived or released quarterbacks Carter Bradley and Nathan Peterman; running backs Brittain Brown and Sincere McCormick; wide receivers Tulu Griffin, Terrell Bynum, and Dax Milne; tight ends Zach Gentry, John Samuel Shenker, and Cole Fotheringham; offensive linemen Ben Brown, Jalen McKenzie, Dalton Wagner, Andrew Coker, Clark Barrington Will Putnam, and Corey Luciano; edge rushers Elerson Smith, David Agoha, Ron Stone Jr., TJ Franklin, and Charles Snowden; defensive tackles Marquan McCall, Noah Shannon, and Matthew Butler; linebackers DaShaun White, Jackson Mitchell, and Darien Butler; and defensive backs Sam Webb, Cornell Armstrong, Ja’Quan Sheppard, Rayshad Williams, Woo Governor, Jaydon Grant, and Phalen Sanford.

As the saying goes, “Once a Raider, always a Raider.” However, Tom Brady is still not yet a Raider — and still won’t be. For now.

Via Mark Maske of the Washington Post, today’s special ownership meeting won’t include a vote on Brady’s bid to buy a piece of the Raiders.

Per Maske, the issue remains pending before the league’s finance committee. It could land on the agenda for the October meeting.

Brady’s deal to buy a portion of the Raiders first was reached in early 2023.

As PFT reported in July, Hall of Famer Richard Seymour and Brady have joined forces in their effort to buy a piece of the Raiders. Together, and with their partners, they would own 10.4 percent of the team.

Today’s meeting primarily relates to the potential rule allowing private equity investment in teams. In theory, owner Mark Davis could decide not to proceed with Brady and Seymour and sell their 10 percent for more money to a private equity fund. While there’s no reason to believe he’d actually do that, the new rule (if passed) could prompt some owners to think twice about pending transactions involving small slices of the total team equity.

The Raiders are moving on from one of their veteran quarterbacks.

Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, Las Vegas is releasing Nathan Peterman.

Peterman, 30, signed with Las Vegas for his second stint with the club earlier this month after he was released by New Orleans. He completed 12-of-19 passes for 108 yards with one touchdown in preseason play.

In 15 career games, Peterman has completed 53 percent of his throws for 712 yards with four touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

The Raiders will start Gardner Minshew at quarterback with Aidan O’Connell as the backup. The club also has undrafted rookie Carter Bradley on its roster at the position.

Chargers edge rusher Joey Bosa was back at the team’s practice, working with an athletic trainer on the side, Kris Rhim of ESPN reports.

It’s the first appearance of Bosa at practice since he left an Aug. 4 joint practice against the Rams with a hand/wrist injury. It is unknown whether that was the injury that kept him out for an extended period.

Coach Jim Harbaugh said a few weeks ago that Bosa was “working through something.”

Bosa, who is entering his ninth season, has played a full season only twice in his career. He missed 12 games in 2022 with a torn groin and eight games last season with a right foot injury.

He also has had a neck strain, a finger dislocation, a left hamstring strain, a left foot injury, three known concussions and an ankle sprain. Bosa has played 93 of a possible 133 games.

The Chargers open the season Sept. 8 against the Raiders, and Harbaugh said he expects Bosa and safety Derwin James to play.

Raiders rookie tight end Brock Bowers didn’t play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Cowboys.

He has not practiced since last week.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said Wednesday that the first-round draft pick has a foot injury but expects Bowers to be ready for the season opener.

“Yeah, just precautionary. Got a foot injury and we just want to protect him,” Pierce said.

Bowers caught two passes for 25 yards in the preseason opener, while playing 11 snaps.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce said last week that all his healthy starters would play. Most did, with rookie tight end Brock Bowers and star receiver Davante Adams the notable exceptions.

Only 11 other players sat out the game against the Cowboys.

This week, Pierce said none of the Raiders’ starters will play. That includes Gardner Minshew, named the starting quarterback this week.

Backup quarterback Aidan O’Connell won’t play either.

Instead, undrafted free agent Carter Bradley is expected to start and play a half before Nathan Peterman plays the second half, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN reports.
