Buffalo Bills

Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky’s status for Week One is up in the air due to a knee injury, but the team thinks he’ll be able to play at some point in the first month of the regular season.

General Manager Brandon Beane said on Wednesday, via Joe Buscaglia of TheAthletic.com, that the team is “cautiously optimistic” that Trubisky will avoid going on injured reserve. If he does wind up on the list, Trubisky will have to sit out at least four games before he returns to active duty.

Beane added that it is “truly unknown” if Trubisky can be ready for the opener against the Cardinals, which is why Beane moved to secure another backup option to Josh Allen.

“I’m excited that we were able to get Mike White. We recruited him hard for the practice squad,” Beane said.

White spent the preseason with the Dolphins, so he’ll have to work quickly to get up to speed in Buffalo because it sounds like there’s a pretty good chance he’ll be in uniform on September 8.

Quarterback Mike White wasn’t out of work long after the Dolphins cut him, and he didn’t have to leave the AFC East.

White has agreed to sign to the Bills’ practice squad, according to multiple reports.

The 29-year-old White was originally drafted by the Cowboys in 2018, then played four years for the Jets and one for the Dolphins. He has seven starts in his NFL career, all with the Jets.

In Buffalo, White will be third in the quarterback pecking order, behind Josh Allen and Mitch Trubisky. After Trubisky suffered a knee injury in the preseason, his availability for Week One against the Cardinals is unknown, so it’s possible that White could be called up to the active roster as Allen’s backup in the opener.

Mike White lost a backup quarterback competition and his job in Miami, but he may be staying in the AFC East.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that White visited the Bills on Tuesday. The Dolphins released White after their final preseason game and are going with Skylar Thompson as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa.

The Bills may need a backup for the start of the regular season. Mitch Trubisky is the only player behind Josh Allen on the initial 53-man roster and he’s dealing with a knee injury that leaves him questionable for at least the season opener.

Ben DiNucci and Anthony Brown were on the Bills roster, but White might be a more attractive option if they won’t have Trubisky on hand against the Cardinals on September 8.

The Bills announced the moves they made to reach 53 players before Tuesday’s deadline.

Veteran offensive lineman La’el Collins and veteran safety Kareem Jackson were among the players the team cut.

Collins signed a one-year deal on April 9. He missed the 2023 season with a knee injury before signing back to the Cowboys’ practice squad at the start of the playoffs.

Jackson signed a one-year deal with the team on July 30. The 15-year NFL veteran finished last season with the Texans, the team that drafted him in 2010.

The Bills also announced they cut defensive tackle Eli Ankou, offensive lineman Keaton Bills, offensive lineman Gunner Britton, wide receiver Deon Cain, offensive lineman Will Clapp, defensive end Kameron Cline, cornerback Te’Cory Couch, tight end Zach Davidson, defensive tackle Branson Deen, quarterback Ben DiNucci, offensive lineman Mike Edwards, running back Frank Gore, Jr., offensive lineman Richard Gouraige, wide receiver K.J. Hamler, cornerback Daequan Hardy, wide receiver Andy Isabella, wide receiver Xavier Johnson, defensive end Kingsley Jonathan, cornerback Keni-H Lovely, tight end Tre’ McKitty, wide receiver Tyrell Shavers, wide receiver Justin Shorter, defensive tackle Gable Steveson, defensive tackle DeShawn Williams and safety Kendall Williamson.

The Bills placed offensive tackle Travis Clayton, running back Darrynton Evans and linebacker Matt Milano on injured reserve, with Milano and Evans designated to return.

Buffalo also finalized a trade with the Jets for cornerback Brandon Codrington.

The Jets and Bills will be squaring off twice in the regular season, but they teamed up to make a trade on Tuesday.

According to multiple reports, the Jets have agreed to send defensive back Brandon Codrington to the Bills. The teams will exchange late-round picks in 2026 to complete the deal.

Codrington signed with the Jets after going undrafted out of North Carolina Central this year. In addition to his defensive role, Codrington was a standout punt returner while in college and he broke loose for big returns on both punts and kickoffs while with the Jets in the preseason.

The Jets have Xavier Gipson back in the return game after a good year in that role in 2023 and that likely led them to get something in return for Codrington instead of just cutting him.

Running back Frank Gore Jr. had some good moments for the Bills in the preseason, but it wasn’t enough for him to make the team’s initial 53-man roster.

According to multiple reports, the Bills are waiving Gore as they make their final cuts of the summer.

Gore ran for over 4,000 yards at Southern Miss and signed with the Bills after going undrafted in April. He ran 33 times for 163 yards and a touchdown during the preseason.

James Cook, fourth-round pick Ray Davis, Ty Johnson, and Darrynton Evans were the other running backs vying for spots on the 53-man roster in Buffalo. Gore’s departure may mean all four of them have made it through the cutdown.

Gable Steveson’s quest to make the Bills’ roster without ever playing football at any level before the NFL has fallen short.

Steveson was an NCAA champion and Olympic gold medalist in wrestling in the heavyweight division, and the Bills figured with that kind of athletic profile he was worth trying out as a defensive lineman. But the Bills have cut Steveson today.

It’s still possible that Steveson could make the Bills’ practice squad or that another team could pick him up, but he won’t be on the 53-player roster in Buffalo.

After playing in the first preseason game, Steveson said he was pleased with the opportunity.

“My first football game ever, definitely a great time, definitely cool to see all the Buffalo Bills fans come out,” Steveson said. “The bright lights, the fans, the loud atmosphere and people getting after it. That’s what you want to see.”

Now Steveson will see if he can continue his NFL career on a practice squad.

Mitch Trubisky has been sidelined by a knee injury recently and it’s unclear if he’ll be able to go in Week One against the Cardinals, but the team isn’t hedging against his absence by keeping a third quarterback on their initial 53-man roster.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the team is releasing Ben DiNucci as part of their moves to get down to the 53-player limit by Tuesday afternoon’s deadline. DiNucci signed with the team on August 12 and appeared in two preseason games.

The Bills also released Anthony Brown on Monday, so that move will leave them with just Trubisky and Josh Allen on the roster.

The team may be planning to bring DiNucci or Brown back to the practice squad so that they would be available to serve as Allen’s backup in the event Trubisky is not able to play. We’ll find out if that’s the case in the coming days.
