Dillon Brooks playing pivotal role in Rockets’ revival

Dillon Brooks has excelled in his veteran role and been one of the keys to Houston's success.

Dillon Brooks has been a key piece to the Houston Rockets’ early success.

The Houston Rockets have been one of the biggest surprises in the early parts of the 2024-25 NBA season. Although players like Alperen Sengun, Jalen Green and Fred VanVleet get most of the recognition for the Rockets’ hot start, another player has played a prominent role on both ends of the court.

Dillon Brooks, the 28-year-old wing, is playing in his second season with the Rockets and his impact has been noticeable. While Brooks is known for his defensive reputation, he’s been able to step up offensively when needed as well. The 114-110 win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday was perhaps the best example, as Brooks led the Rockets in scoring with 27 points. He also notched six rebounds, two assists and three steals across 37 minutes.

As good as Brooks has been on offense this season, Brooks’ calling card is his defense. With his elite ability as an on-ball defender, Brooks plays an important role on a Rockets team that ranks second in the league in defensive rating. Their 105.5 rating is only bested by the Oklahoma City Thunder (103.0).

Brooks has already shown his veteran presence while playing for the Memphis Grizzlies, but he’s taken things to a whole new level in Houston. If Brooks stays healthy and plays more than 65 games, he should garner consideration for a spot on one of the NBA All-Defensive Teams. He’s been that good in 2024-25, and it only takes a quick glance at what the Rockets do on defense to back that up.
