Overview

Spencer played high school basketball at the Boys Latin School of Maryland and was named the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association Player of the Year as a senior. Entering college, Spencer was a three-star recruit and committed to the Loyola Greyhounds. The 6-foot-4 guard was named to the Patriot League All-Freshman Team in 2019-20 before suffering a hip injury that caused him to miss most of his sophomore campaign. Spencer was named first-team All-Patriot League as a junior after averaging 18.9 points. He then transferred to Rutgers where he made 34 starts in 2022-23. Spencer used his extra year of eligibility (from COVID-19) to transfer to UConn and helped the Huskies secure their second of back-to-back NCAA Championships. He averaged 14.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.5 steals in 33.0 minutes across 40 games in 2023-24, all of which were starts. His older brother, Pat, is a two-way player for the Golden State Warriors.

Analysis

Spencer is one of the best outside shooters in his class, which he illustrated by shooting 44.0% on 5.6 three-point attempts per contest in 2023-24. The 6-foot-4 guard excels playing off-ball and doesn’t need a lot of touches to score efficiently. Spencer is also a smart defender who is adept and reading passing lanes and creating turnovers.

Projection

Spencer possesses a similar skillset to those of Max Strus and Corey Kispert as elite spot-up shooters who can hold their own defensively. In the NBA, Spencer’s shooting ability should translate immediately, allowing him to provide spacing for second units.
