William F. Baker
William F. (Bill) Baker is the structural engineering partner at Skidmore Owings & Merrill LLP, in Chicago, IL. He holds degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of Illinois. He received an honorary doctorate in engineering from the University of Stuttgart; an honorary doctorate from Heriot-Watt University; and was the first American to receive the Fritz Leonhardt Preis from Germany.
Bill is one of only three living Americans to receive the Gold Medal from the Institution of Structural Engineers. He is the recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Award. Widely regarded for his work on supertall buildings and long span roof structures, he may be best known for the development of the “buttressed core” structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest man-made structure, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Bill is married to Betsy, and they have four children.
