Area volleyball roundup for Oct. 5: Burke bests Gayville-Volin for GPC title

LAKE ANDES, S.D. — Burke backed up its Class B No. 2 ranking with another strong showing, going undefeated en route to winning the Great Plains Conference tournament championship on Saturday.

In the title match, Burke defeated Gayville-Volin, a program receiving votes in Class B. Set scores were 25-23 and 25-22. The Cougars did not drop a set in the tournament, defeating Avon, Centerville, Corsica-Stickney and Irene-Wakonda on their way to the title match.

Kailee Frank notched 12 kills and six digs to lead the Cougars over the Raiders, while Emmie Hausmann added nine kills and a solo block. Kyrie Matucha had 10 digs and one service ace, as Emmy Spencer and Ava Sargent combined for 23 assists.

With the 5-0 weekend, Burke improved to 22-1 on the season and extended its win streak to 21 matches. Next up for the Cougars is a visit Avon on Tuesday.

Saturday’s leaders

  • Also at the GPC tournament, Tripp-Delmont/Armour went 2-2, earning wins over Scotland and Alcester-Hudson. Mia Reiner had 34 kills, 28 digs and five aces for the tournament, while Kinley Spaans offered 58 assists, 23 digs and 16 kills.
  • At the 281 Conference tournament in Wessington Springs, Hitchcock-Tulare defeated Wolsey-Wessington (25-20, 25-8) in the title match to remain undefeated on the season. Katelyn Schroeder posted eight kills, 11 digs and four blocks for the Patriots in the championship, as Ella Johnson had six service aces.
  • Wagner edged Tri-Valley in five sets, including taking the fourth set at 30-28 and the fifth at 16-14. Ravyn Medricky recorded 14 kills, six blocks and three aces, and Hannah Holzbauer finished with 14 kills, 14 digs and four blocks to lead the Red Raiders. Braxton Nedved put up 33 assists, 18 digs, eight kills, four blocks and three aces, as Libby Kotab chipped in 29 digs and two aces.
  • Mobridge-Pollock defeated Winner in straight sets, paced by 20 kills and two aces from Raelyn Aberle. For Winner, Lilly Barfuss had nine kills and one block.
  • Brietta Tims had 18 kills and two aces, while Addisen Barber picked up 28 assists and 11 digs for Class A No. 3 Sioux Falls Christian, which knocked off Class AA No. 3 O’Gorman in four sets.
