According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, 18-year-old Morgan Thompson, of Estelline, was following a semi in a 1999 GMC pickup eastbound along SD 32. When the semi slowed to make a right turn on 475th St, authorities say Thompson attempted to swerve into the left lane and struck the semi's trailer.

Thompson's passenger, 18-year-old Davina Darveaux, of Pipestone, Minnesota, sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Thompson sustained minor injuries. Troopers say neither were wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the semi, 30-year-old Valley Springs resident Taylor Zeutenhorst was not injured.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, though Troopers do continue to investigate the circumstances.
