Liz Truss stormed off stage and fumed "that's not funny" after jokers unfurled a brutal lettuce banner behind her.
The former Prime Minister, who spectacularly lost her seat at the General Election, was voicing her support for Donald Trump when the stunt unfolded. She was oblivious as the sign, which said "I crashed the economy" appeared behind her, sparking laughter in the audience.
Video shows her predicting Mr Trump would win the Presidential election and hyping up the importance of the economy. She only realised the banner was above her when an anxious-looking man walked onstage and drew her attention to it. The cringeworthy clip captures her fury when she realised what happened.
It happened at Beccles public hall in Suffolk, where she was promoting her book 10 Years To Save The West.
"I have no idea where that came from," her embarrassed host stammered. Ms Truss then said "that's not funny" before gathering her papers and walking off the stage. Campaign group Led By Donkeys claimed responsibility, stating on Twitter /X: " Liz Truss is on a pro-Trump speaking tour. So we dropped a strategically-positioned remote-controlled lettuce banner."
In a follow-up post it said: "She didn’t find it funny." Ironically it came hours after Ms Truss voiced her support for free speech as she shared her backing for X/Twitter chief Elon Musk, who has been accused of stirring up tensions in the UK.

Ms Truss has become synonymous with lettuces after being forced to quit No10 before an iceberg expired in 2022. She has previously described the lettuce debacle as "puerile" and claimed the media didn't understand her ideas. The jibe about her premiership lasting longer than a lettuce came from the Daily Star, and their livestream showing a lettuce in a wig and googly ears during Ms Truss' final weeks went viral.
Former Tory minister Conor Burns later shared the clip, throwing shade at the ex-PM. He wrote: "Important for politicians today to have a sense of humour. Requires self awareness of course."
The former Tory leader lasted just 49 days in the top job - including 10 days when the country was mourning the Queen's death. Her mini-budget sparked a massive financial crisis that is still being felt now. The banner appeared behind her as she said: "I support Trump and I want him to win... But the, it's what I was saying about incumbents, I think the average American is not doing well and people do vote on.."
Ms Truss has been vocal on US politics after she was kicked out by voters in South West Norfolk last month. She has voiced her support for Mr Musk - who has claimed the UK is heading for civil war and whined far-right thugs are treated differently from other criminals.
The former PM wrote: "I am appalled by the attacks on free speech in Britain and Europe. We can't be truly free without free speech. Good for Elon Musk and X for standing up to these bullies."
Mr Musk responded: "Thank you for your support." It comes as polling revealed that support from Ms Truss could be fatal for a Tory leadership candidate's chances. Ipsos found 65% said their chances of winning would be hampered if the disaster ex-PM backs them.
