Carol Lathrop, of San Jose, CA, passed away May 5, 2024 in Santa Clara at the age of 85 after a short hospitalization due to heart complications. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James “Jim” Lathrop; two daughters, Laura Lathrop and Julie Nano; son-in-law Dave Nano; two grand-daughters, Felicity and Dahlia.Born in 1939 in Long Beach, CA to Ezel “Pat” and Veda she spent her youth with them and her older brother Richard. She later settled in Livermore, CA where she and Jim raised their children and then moved to San Jose, CA in 2004.She was a graduate of UC Berkeley criminology department who went on to work as a probation officer in Hayward, CA. She later worked as a landlord/tenant mediator through HUD and also headed a power conservation program through the city of Livermore.A champion of women’s rights, she campaigned for the Equal Rights Amendment, was active with the League of Women Voters, and made sure her daughters had ample opportunities.Carol was a long time member of the Presbyterian Church where she participated in Bible study, women’s groups, family groups, and Stephen’s Ministries.Charitable donations may be made on her behalf to ChildFund, League of Women Voters, or Alzheimer’s Association.A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on June 30 at Stone Church of Willow Glen, in San Jose, CA immediately followed by a reception. Carol chose cremation and at a later date family will spread her ashes through Better Place Forests.
