UPDATED:

PACHECO — One person died late Sunday and another was critically injured in a three-car crash on an East Bay freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

The crash happened at about 10:55 p.m. on southbound Interstate 680 near the Concord Avenue exit and Highway 4, according to the CHP spokesperson Officer Dan Gilmore. The driver of a Honda involved in the wreck got out of the car and later was hit by a Chevy Tahoe and a Toyota Corolla, Gilmore said.

That driver, who has not been identified, died at the scene. Authorities said the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The Toyota ended up on its roof, and its driver suffered major injuries, Gilmore said.

According to Gilmore, the initial investigation indicated the Honda lost control just south of Highway 4 and crashed into the right concrete barrier. After deflecting off the barrier, it came to rest in the two far right lanes on I-680, just north of Concord Avenue.

The Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Corolla then hit the driver who got out of the Honda, Gilmore said. The Corolla veered left after impact, hit the center barrier and overturned. An ambulance took the Corolla driver to a hospital.

The CHP said all lanes of I-680 were blocked after the wreck and that they also had to close the eastbound and westbound transition ramps from Highway 4 onto Interstate 680.

All of the lanes remained closed until about 3 a.m., according to the CHP.
