MLB umpire Pat Hoberg is facing a potential punishment for possibly violating the league’s gambling policy, according to a story from the Associated Press.

“I am appealing Major League Baseball’s determination that I should be disciplined for violating the sports betting policies.” Hoberg said in a statement issued by the union. “While that appeal is pending, it would not be appropriate to discuss the case. That said, I have devoted my adult life to the profession of umpiring, and the integrity of baseball is of the utmost importance to me. I look forward to the appeal process, and I am grateful that the Major League Baseball Umpires Association is supporting me in the appeal.”

The 37-year-old has been a full-time MLB ump since 2017, three years after he got to call his first game in the big leagues.

MLB issued a statement in which it said there was no proof “that games worked by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way,” but there would still be discipline for the alleged gambling.

During Game 2 of the 2022 World Series, Hoberg was behind the plate and given a perfect grade for his calls on balls and strikes.
