- NFL. Chris Jones asks Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes to re-sign former teammate for Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes is one of the face's of the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has become a household name since being drafted by the team back in 2017.
However, it all could have been very different had a young Patrick gone down a different path during his teenage years.
That's when he had to make a decision on his future. Although he was a multi-sport athlete, given his ability to play baseball, basketball and football, the time had come for Patrick to decide which sport to focus on.
Randi Mahomes was key in that decision
It turns out that Patrick's mother, Randi, was key in her son's decision. She discussed what that was like during a recent appearance on the 'Mom Game' podcast.
There she revealed that Patrick almost gave up on football as it was the last thing he liked.
"I know it is hard to believe," said Randi. "But he did come to me in his junior summer, the year before he was a junior, like I guess his sophomore summer.
"And he said he wanted to quit football. He didn't want to play football."
With her son keen to move on from the sport, Randi revealed that they spoke in the living room. She told him: "If you quite football, you are going to be bored in the stands."
Given they lived in Texas, they would continue to go to games even if Patrick decided he didn't want to play anymore.
The talk clearly left its mark on Patrick, who realized he would miss playing the quarterback position if he was forced to watch on from the stands.
Randi also revealed that Patrick would take long breaks from football, which allowed him to rediscover his passion once he turned to it.
"His whole life when he play football in high school, he would pick up a football the day we start football, and then he would put it down and never touch it again, until the next year," said Randi.
"Because then he started basketball, then it was baseball."
