In the even you have recently filed your taxes and you want to find out why you haven't received your refund, you can typically check the status of your refund on the IRS's "Where's My Refund?" website about 48 hours after e-filing your tax return. This tool also allows you to find refund information for the current and previous two years.

"Taxpayers don't need to check their refund status more than once a day," the official IRS website reads. "The IRS updates Where's My Refund overnight in most cases. Calling the IRS won't speed up a tax refund. The information available on Where's My Refund is the same information available to IRS telephone assistors. Taxpayers should allow time for their bank or credit union to post the refund to their account or for it to arrive in the mail."

Generally, the IRS states that it takes up to 21 days to process an e-filed return and at least four weeks for returns that are mailed or amended.

However, several factors can cause delays in processing your refund. Common issues include errors on your tax return, which may require additional reviews, corrections, or supplemental forms.

Alejandra Castro, an IRS spokesperson, mentioned in an interview with NBC New York that visiting an IRS assistance center does not speed up the refund process.

Instead, the fastest way to get information and track your refund is through the IRS2GO app or the "Where's My Refund?" section on the IRS website.

"Visiting a taxpayer assistance center does not speed up your refund," Castro said. "However, if a taxpayer has any doubts about where their tax return is in the process, if it's been a long time that it seems to the taxpayer that something could be wrong, then they definitely should call the IRS or set up an appointment to go to one of the taxpayer assistance centers."
