The Minnesota Department of Revenue has reissued 128,000 one-time tax rebate checks that had gone uncashed and expired. These new checks were sent to the most recent addresses on file for recipients and will be valid for two years.

Originally, nearly 2.1 million Direct Tax Rebate payments, totaling almost $1 billion, were issued under a law passed in May 2023. The eligibility and amounts were based on previously filed 2021 income tax or property tax refund returns.

Stimulus check: Who is eligible to receive a payment of $600 in February?

Who is eligible for the rebate?

To qualify for the rebate, individuals needed to be Minnesota residents for part or all of 2021. They were required to file either the 2021 Form M1, Minnesota Individual Income Tax, or the 2021 Form M1PR, Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter's Property Tax Refund by December 31, 2022.

Additionally, their 2021 adjusted gross income had to be $150,000 or less for married joint filers, or $75,000 or less for all other filers. It was also necessary that they were not claimed as a dependent on someone else's 2021 Minnesota income tax return.

Taxpayers who passed away before January 1, 2023, are not eligible for the rebate. However, if an eligible couple filed jointly for 2021 and one spouse passed away before January 1, 2023, the surviving spouse is entitled to the full rebate amount.

When will you be getting this Direct Tax Rebate payment?

All original payments have already been distributed. Direct deposits were prioritized, followed by checks mailed through September when direct deposits failed. Some checks that expired were reissued late last year.

The reissued paper checks were sent by Submittable Holdings Inc., based in Missoula, Montana, and arrived in plain white envelopes. These checks are valid for 60 days from the issue date. If they go uncashed, the payments may be turned over to the Minnesota Department of Commerce's Unclaimed Property Division.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue encourages taxpayers who did not receive their check to review the eligibility criteria. Eligible individuals who did not receive a check can contact the department at (651) 565-6595 or via email at [email protected] for assistance.
