Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council, spoke to MARCA MX during the Sports Summit Mexico. The boxing leader highlighted that every era has its own legend in the sport of boxing and therefore there is no concern about what could happen in the post Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez era.

Who will be Canelo Alvarez's replacement in Mexican boxing?

There is no doubt that today's boxing has in Canelo Alvarez the immediate reference of success and controversy. At 33 years of age, the fighter from Guadalajara is currently the best exponent in the ring.

He is the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world. He has won titles in four different divisions, including super middleweight, super welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight. While he continues to yield performances and success, the reality is that time is passing and Alvarez is slowly beginning to reach the end of his boxing career.

"Just as Chavez was the main attraction at the time, there was Chiquita Gonzalez, Ricardo Lopez or Miguel Angel Gonzalez, but Chavez captured all the public's attention. Now there is Canelo, but there are many more and we don't know where the next Canelo will come from," said Sulaiman for MARCA MX.

So there is no rush at the WBC to talk about a next legend.

"Yes (we are calm), there have always been (boxing legends like Canelo). Mexican boxing is tireless in talent and is the sport of the Mexicans."

What is the current state of Mexican boxing?

"We are going through a great moment in Mexican boxing with the captain of champions who is Canelo, who is the most important boxer in the world, but also behind and next to Canelo there are champions who are at the highest level. Mexican boxing is always ahead and there is boxing for a long time to come".

While a sporting career is one of growth, for Mauricio Sulaiman, the boxer takes a slower pace in order to reach the consecration of sporting glory.

"We live in a new, different world that didn't exist before. With social media everything is fast and immediate, there is a demand for information and results. However, in boxing it can't be like that, because it is a very long process to go from amateur to professional and to solidify a career with a championship".
